Bayer strengthens combined seed, crop protection portfolio ahead of blockbuster launches
The strategy focuses on integrating AI-driven breeding platforms with novel chemical and biotechnology traits to boost farm yields, optimize input efficiency, and improve climate resilience for growers worldwide.
GERMANY – Bayer AG has announced it is accelerating its combined seed and crop protection Research & Development (R&D) pipeline, officially entering a major deployment phase aimed at bringing ten blockbuster agricultural innovations to global markets over the next decade.
Unveiled during an innovation showcase in Huxley, Iowa, the company detailed an integrated portfolio strategy connecting seeds, traits, chemical crop protection, and digital tools, with each blockbuster targeted to generate at least €500 million (US$580 million) in peak annual sales.
The commercial rollout is already underway with two initial blockbusters: the Preceon Smart Corn System, a short-stature corn hybrid offering enhanced weather resilience, and Plenexos, a broad-spectrum insecticide designed to combat sucking pests across soy, cotton, fruits, and vegetables.
Preceon has been introduced across the United States, Mexico, Italy, and Spain, with Argentina entering commercial deployment this year.
Simultaneously, Plenexos has made its commercial debut in Colombia, with regulatory expansions set for Brazil, Mexico, and the United States.
Bayer’s pipeline advances come alongside critical developments in its soybean traits.
The company is preparing for the North American rollout of Vyconic™, the industry’s first soybean trait stack delivering tolerance to five herbicide modes of action.
Bayer anticipates strong adoption of Vyconic™ and subsequent launch of HT5, helping to regain trait leadership position in North America by 2032.
In South America, Bayer is advancing Intacta 5+ for Brazilian soybean growers ahead of its targeted launch in the 2027/2028 season.
Additionally, researchers unveiled genome-edited standable soy designed to maintain plant integrity under heavy yield loads, alongside early-stage progress on Icafolin, a novel blockbuster herbicide molecule being co-developed with custom trait tolerance.
Beyond current market entries, the enterprise outlined several breakthrough research initiatives driven by its connected R&D engine and AI-powered CropKey discovery platform.
For the first time, Bayer is simultaneously developing a new broad-spectrum herbicide molecule, Icafolin, alongside a corresponding sixth-generation biotech trait for crop tolerance, creating a fully integrated weed control system.
The company also revealed early-stage development of genome-edited standable soy, modifying plant architecture to prevent high-yielding, tall soybean varieties from falling over, and expanded efforts into hybridizing four new crops: hybrid wheat, camelina, winter oilseed rape, and CoverCress.
Rodrigo Santos, President of Bayer’s Crop Science Division, emphasized that combining molecular crop protection with elite seed genetics powered by artificial intelligence and precision breeding allows the company to deliver whole-farm solutions that raise yields while mitigating climate and pest pressures.
Supported by its Dynamic Shared Ownership operating structure, Bayer reaffirmed its financial framework, targeting above-market division growth, €3.5 billion (US$4.06B) in incremental sales, and over €3 billion (US$3.48B) in annual free operating cash flow by 2029 to deliver long-term value for growers and shareholders.
