IMCD opens integrated Food and Nutrition laboratory in Cologne

The new life sciences hub brings together Food & Nutrition, Pharmaceutical and Beauty & Personal Care to strengthen formulation, innovation and regulatory support.

GERMANY – IMCD Group, a global leader in specialty chemicals and ingredients distribution, has officially reopened its fully modernized Food & Nutrition application laboratory in Cologne, creating a pioneering Life Science Hub.

Launched on January 6, 2026, the state-of-the-art facility integrates food & nutrition, pharmaceutical, and beauty & personal care labs under one roof for the first time in Germany, fostering interdisciplinary innovation.

This multi-million investment equips manufacturers with hands-on support for recipe development, technical consulting, and regulatory compliance across bakery, beverage, confectionery, dairy, edible oils & fats, fruits & vegetables, nutrition and savoury segments.

The Cologne laboratory spans advanced test kitchens, sensory evaluation suites, and high-precision equipment tailored for complex formulation challenges like texture optimization, flavor enhancement, shelf-life extyyension, and nutrient fortification.

As part of IMCD’s global network of 80+ application labs, it draws on international expertise while addressing DACH-region demands for clean-label solutions and functional performance.

Daniel Kany, Business Unit Manager for Food & Nutrition at IMCD Germany, emphasized its transformative potential: “The new Life Science Hub strengthens interdisciplinary product development and provides our food and beverage customers with a best-in-class environment for application support, technical consulting and regulatory support with the aim of developing innovative and market-ready solutions.”

Strategic synergies arise from co-locating the Food & Nutrition lab with IMCD’s established Pharmaceutical Technical Centre, supporting solid, semi-solid, and liquid formulations, and Beauty & Personal Care studio for skin, hair, and cosmetic prototypes.

This setup enables cross-pollination, such as flavor-masking technologies for supplements or emulsion expertise for dairy-nutrition hybrids.

Katja Wilmes, Application Technologist, noted: “With our modern equipment, the test kitchen and the interdisciplinary interfaces, we can support our customers even more specifically with demanding recipes.”

IMCD positions Cologne as a nerve center for Germany’s €100 billion (US$116.44B) F&B sector amid tightening EU sustainability and nutrition labeling rules.

The hub supports ProTerra-certified ingredients, plant-based transitions, and high-pressure processing trials, catering to industrial bakers and multinational CPG firms navigating raw material volatility.

Open for customer visits and collaborative projects, the facility includes virtual tours and training seminars on trends like sugar reduction and clean-label preservatives.

This launch aligns with IMCD’s 2025-2030 growth strategy emphasizing technical services, which now represent 15% of revenues.

By consolidating life sciences under one roof, IMCD differentiates against competitors like Brenntag and Azelis, offering end-to-end solutions from concept to commercialization.

The Cologne hub cements Germany’s role as Europe’s formulation powerhouse, empowering manufacturers to meet evolving consumer demands for taste, health, and sustainability in a post- HFSS regulatory landscape.
