IFF opens Vanilla Innovation Center in Madagascar to strengthen supply chain resilience

The facility is designed to deepen material understanding, optimize crop quality, and advance sustainable sourcing right at the origin of production.

MADAGASCAR – IFF, a global leader in flavors, fragrances, food ingredients, health & bioscience, has inaugurated a new Vanilla Innovation Center in Toamasina, Madagascar, marking a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to science-led flavor development at the source of one of the globe’s most prized natural ingredients.

The facility spans 650 square meters and is strategically located near major vanilla cultivation and processing areas.

The site, located in Madagascar’s principal seaport, is designed to help ensure greater consistency in vanilla quality and supply, with proximity to vanilla-growing regions and post-harvest processing activities.

The center consolidates lab analysis, extraction, scent and flavor creation, and application development under a single roof.

Its laboratory capabilities include contaminant and disease detection, molecular profiling, and scalable extraction equipment for exploring different vanilla types.

The facility also features a flavor creation unit with application lab capabilities for dairy, bakery, and confectionery products, as well as a research greenhouse called The Bloomery that showcases vanilla varieties.

By embedding these capabilities close to the crop, IFF aims to understand natural variability better and translate on-the-ground insights into tailored solutions for customers worldwide.

Adam Jańczuk, Senior Vice President of Research, Creation and Design for Taste at IFF, emphasized the broader significance of the investment.

He noted that by strengthening the company’s presence at origin, IFF connects science, creativity, and sustainability more closely, enabling faster responses to climate change while safeguarding quality and creating value across the supply chain.

Marcus Pesch, Vice President of Research and Development at IFF, described the center as built to turn insight into action, adding that bringing science, flavor creation, and application development together at origin enables more collaborative work with customers, improved speed and consistency, and market-ready solutions grounded in the realities of vanilla production.

The center also serves as a hub for knowledge sharing and capability building, delivering hands-on training, workshops, and laboratory programs that bring together experts, customers, and local teams through IFF’s dedicated RE-MASTER VANILLA™ program.

The Madagascar facility is fully integrated into IFF’s global vanilla network, complementing existing capabilities across sourcing, extraction, flavor design, and application development, and supporting improved traceability and ethical sourcing initiatives.
