C.H. Guenther launches new center of excellence in UK

The innovation hub is designed to accelerate the development of premium bakery products for quick-service restaurants, foodservice operators, and retailers across the UK and Europe.

UK – C.H. Guenther & Son (CHG) has launched a new state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence at its flagship bakery facility in Coventry, creating a dedicated innovation and customer collaboration hub designed to accelerate the development of premium bakery products for customers across the UK and Europe.

The 172-square-meter facility is a dedicated hub for innovation and customer collaboration, designed to accelerate the development of premium bakery products for quick-service restaurant groups, foodservice operators, and retailers across the UK and Europe.

The purpose-built development hub integrates a commercial-scale pilot bakery, a customer demonstration kitchen, sensory evaluation rooms, an innovation suite, and dedicated co-development spaces.

By housing the facility alongside CHG’s major production plant, opened in 2023 following a £38 million (US$51.36M) investment and producing roughly 72,000 buns per hour, the manufacturer aims to eliminate the traditional lag between initial recipe trials and continuous, large-scale output.

Clients will be able to work directly with CHG’s culinary, commercial, and technical specialists to test and refine products under operational conditions that closely mirror full-scale industrial manufacturing.

The opening aligns with evolving regional demand trends, as food brands seek to expand offerings in high-growth segments such as potato bun formats, free-from products, artisan-inspired goods, protein-enriched baked goods, and smaller portion sizes.

The facility allows these complex concepts to undergo sensory testing and pilot-scale validation before moving onto commercial lines, lowering process risks and ensuring product consistency.

Paul Tripp, European vice president and managing director for CHG, said the investment is part of the company’s long-term strategy to strengthen relationships with leading foodservice brands through innovation, operational excellence and continued investment in its UK and EU manufacturing base.

He added that early customer feedback has described the Centre as industry-leading and a unique one-stop shop for collaborative innovation.

The Centre opening marks another important milestone in CHG’s long-term vision to boost volume growth and expand its innovation presence in the Pan-European region.

The UK and Europe remain strategically important markets for the business, and the new Centre of Excellence and the role it will play in supporting future manufacturing growth will unlock further opportunities to invest and grow alongside existing customers, build new partnerships and expand the breadth of premium bakery products its experts can bring to market.
