Morocco completes U.S. wheat imports, emerging as key African buyer in MY2025

The shipments position the kingdom as the third-largest African customer to have fully received all contracted U.S. wheat volumes.

MOROCCO – Morocco has completed the full delivery of its U.S. wheat purchases for the 2025 marketing year, importing 61,700 tons over a six-month period, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The shipments, delivered between June 1 and December 18, position the kingdom as the third-largest African customer to have fully received all contracted U.S. wheat volumes for the season, with no outstanding sales pending.

USDA figures show cumulative exports to Morocco reached 61.7 thousand tons during the period, placing the country among a small group of African buyers that not only booked U.S. wheat but also completed delivery within the marketing year.

This performance reflects steady import demand and relatively efficient logistics, at a time when several African markets continue to face delayed shipments.

The completion of Morocco’s orders comes against a backdrop of sharply rising U.S. wheat exports to Africa in the 2025–2026 agricultural season.

Total shipments to the continent have increased to 1.71 million tons so far, up from 450,000 tons in the previous season. Morocco accounted for a meaningful share of this growth, alongside major importers Nigeria and South Africa.

Nigeria remained Africa’s largest destination for U.S. wheat, importing 1.19 million tons, with an additional 28,000 tons still awaiting delivery.

South Africa followed with 195,000 tons already received. Other markets that expanded purchases include Côte d’Ivoire, which imported 56,700 tons, while Egypt took delivery of 38,300 tons with a further 35,000 tons pending.

Algeria imported 20,400 tons, with 33,000 tons still outstanding. Smaller volumes were shipped to Guinea, Mauritania, Senegal, and Mozambique, although most of these countries still have undelivered sales on the books.

Globally, U.S. wheat exports totaled 14.46 million tons in the current season. Asia remained the largest regional buyer, accounting for 5.17 million tons, followed by Latin America with 4.32 million tons.

Outside Africa, the largest U.S. wheat customers were Mexico, Japan, the Philippines, and South Korea, underscoring sustained global demand for American wheat despite intense competition from other exporting regions.

For Morocco, the completed imports are significant for both food security and milling operations. The country relies heavily on wheat imports to supply its milling and baking industries, particularly in years when domestic harvests are affected by weather variability.

Recently, Reuters, citing Philippe Heusele, president of international relations at Intercéréales, announced that the country would import 3.5 million metric tons of soft wheat from France during the 2025/2026 marketing year.
