The company is building export links and processing capacity as demand for organic food rises in Europe.

MOLDOVA – Moldova is growing its role in the European organic food market, with Prograin Organic leading efforts to supply certified products to buyers across the region.
Based in Chișinău, the company has built an integrated model that covers farming, collection, processing and export. This approach reflects a wider shift in Moldova’s agriculture sector as producers move from raw exports to certified goods with higher value.
Agriculture remains central to Moldova’s economy, contributing about 7.4% to GDP and over 45% of total exports. Grains and oilseeds lead this trade, making up 42.3% of agri-food exports in 2025. That year, exports of these products reached about US$856 million, up from US$655 million in 2024, a 31% rise.
Prograin Organic works with 35 farmers across central and northern Moldova. The company supports their shift to organic farming that meets European Union standards. It now manages 3,000 hectares of certified land and collects about 10,000 tonnes of grains, oilseeds and legumes each year. The business records an annual turnover of about MDL 100 million (US$5.6 million) and employs 40 specialists.
“For us, organic agriculture is a responsibility towards the environment and the future of agriculture in the Republic of Moldova. We believe in using the country’s agricultural potential through authentic products that are internationally competitive,” said CEO Spartac Chilat.
To meet strict import rules, the company runs a processing and storage site in Florești. The facility uses carbon dioxide treatment to protect grains without chemical pesticides and applies optical sorting to ensure quality. Each batch is tracked to meet EU traceability rules.
Exports account for about 80% of Prograin Organic’s business. Key markets include Germany, Israel, the Netherlands, France and Italy. The company has also taken part in trade fairs such as BIOFACH in Germany with support from the Investment Agency of the Republic of Moldova through its BRIDGE Export programme.
“The BRIDGE Export programme supports the internationalisation of Moldovan companies through concrete instruments,” said Irina Tolstousov, Deputy Director of the agency.
Over the past three years, the programme has generated more than MDL 1 billion in exports (about US$56 million).
European investors have also shown interest. In 2022, Anders Invest International Food and Agri Holding BV invested about EUR 5 million (US$5.4 million) in the company. The funds supported upgrades in infrastructure, logistics and management.
Alongside exports, Prograin Organic has started selling organic flour and seeds locally. The company plans to add sunflower oil production, expand gluten free products and enter markets such as the United States, Japan and South Korea.
