INDIA – Millers for Nutrition, powered by TechnoServe, has partnered with the Gujarat Roller Flour Millers Association (GRFMA) and Fortify Health to launch seven new fortified wheat flour brands in Ahmedabad.
This rollout marks a significant step forward in India’s ongoing battle against malnutrition and anaemia, particularly among vulnerable populations.
This initiative was formally introduced during a joint training workshop on “Wheat Flour Fortification” held in Ahmedabad in late 2024.
The launch marks an important milestone in making fortified staple foods widely available in open markets, with fortified wheat flour offered in a range of packaging sizes from 5 to 50 kilograms.
The fortified wheat flour products are enriched with essential micronutrients such as iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12, which are critical in addressing hidden hunger and improving public health outcomes.
According to data from the World Health Organization and the Global Hunger Index, malnutrition remains a pressing challenge in India: 35.5% of children under five are stunted, 18.7% are wasted, and anaemia affects nearly half of women, a quarter of men, and two-thirds of children under five.
In addition, vitamin D deficiency impacts 60% of the population, while 20% of adolescents have insufficient vitamin A levels.
Fortifying staple wheat flour provides a sustainable and cost-effective strategy to improve the nutritional status and health outcomes of millions across India.
Leaders from the Gujarat Roller Flour Millers Association expressed strong commitment to this initiative, emphasizing their role in driving the availability and acceptance of fortified wheat flour products across the region.
The program combines efforts from the food industry, government bodies, including the Food and Drug Administration, and civil society groups to raise awareness, share best practices in fortification, and ensure quality control throughout the production and supply chain.
This initiative aligns with the broader Millers for Nutrition global coalition, which works to engage food millers worldwide in enhancing the quality of staple foods such as wheat flour and edible oils through fortification.
By leveraging capacity-building, access to premixes, and robust partnerships, the coalition aims to reach over a billion people globally by 2026 with fortified staples that help reduce malnutrition and support economic and social development.
The launch of fortified wheat flour brands by Gujarat Millers and Millers for Nutrition represents a proactive step toward addressing micronutrient deficiencies.
It underscores the vital role that millers play in nutrition security by ensuring fortified staples reach the open market, supporting India’s national health goals, and improving the diet quality of millions.
