MEXICO – Grupo Bimbo and Grupo Aeroméxico announced a strategic multi-year partnership on June 7, 2026, to drive decarbonization across Latin America by promoting the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in corporate and business travel.
The partnership marks the first corporate agreement of its kind in the region, establishing a model for cross-industry collaboration to tackle emissions from commercial air travel.
Under the new agreement, Grupo Bimbo will integrate SAF into its corporate and business travel itineraries across Latin America via Aeroméxico’s commercial network. This targeted initiative provides a dual benefit for the environmental accounting of both Mexican corporate giants.
Aeroméxico will directly reduce its Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions, the direct emissions generated from burning traditional jet fuel.
Concurrently, Grupo Bimbo will significantly reduce its Scope 3 emissions, which encompass indirect value chain emissions from operational activities such as employee business travel.
The environmental impact of the shift is substantial, as certified SAF derived from renewable feedstocks, such as organic waste and used cooking oils, can reduce life-cycle carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional fossil-based jet fuels.
Furthermore, the fuel requires no modifications to existing aircraft infrastructure or fueling systems, making it the most viable immediate solution for aviation decarbonization.
To ensure accountability, the emission reductions generated through this partnership will be fully certified using internationally recognized mechanisms for SAF allocation and traceability.
Executive leadership from both firms framed the alliance as a vital stepping stone toward achieving their respective mid-century climate targets.
Karen Farías, Director of Sustainability and ESG at Aeroméxico, underscored the strategic importance of the collaboration.
She stated that the alliance reflects how collaboration can accelerate the transition towards more sustainable aviation in Mexico and Latin America, driving concrete actions to reduce emissions in key activities such as business travel, and that such a transition will only be possible through a network of partners committed to significantly reducing the environmental impact of their entire value chains.
For Grupo Bimbo, the initiative complements its broader decarbonization roadmap, which spans regenerative agriculture, green logistics, and the transition of 92% of its global operations to renewable energy sources.
Both companies have ratified their commitment before the United Nations to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Bimbo’s broader decarbonization strategy will also encompass technological improvements in its agricultural processes, land logistics systems, and the use of clean electric energy.
Alejandra Vázquez, Global Director of Sustainability at Grupo Bimbo, mentioned: “We have a clear goal for 2050: for Grupo Bimbo to be a company with net zero carbon emissions. To achieve this, initiatives such as the one we have today with Aeroméxico add a grain of flour to this goal, which requires the joint effort of all stakeholders across our value chain.”
By combining their operational scales, both companies aim not only to shrink their immediate carbon footprints but also to stimulate domestic investment in Mexico’s sustainable fuel infrastructure.
As global climate targets draw closer, the Bimbo-Aeroméxico alliance signals a growing trend among major Latin American enterprises to embed tangible, measurable carbon-reduction solutions directly into their long-term corporate strategies.
