Futurelife launches zero-sugar granola variant

The new addition to its Zero range, which contains no added cane sugar, is high in dietary fibre and includes both probiotics (Bacillus coagulans) and the prebiotic inulin to support digestive health.

SOUTH AFRICA – Futurelife, a pioneer in functional “smart foods,” has launched the Fruit & Berry flavour of its Zero Granola Crunch range, expanding its zero added cane sugar portfolio to meet booming demand for healthier breakfast options.

The launch responds to growing consumer concern about sugar intake; South Africa’s average daily sugar consumption remains well above recommended levels, and to rising demand for breakfast options that combine convenience, taste, and functional benefits.

Available now in a convenient 600g pack, the low-GI clusters feature whole‑grain rolled oats (55%), coconut, barley flakes, raisins, freeze-dried strawberries, and digestive boosters like probiotics and prebiotics to support digestive health.

With no added cane sugar, the product counters South Africa’s alarming average daily intake of 12-24 teaspoons, far exceeding WHO’s six-teaspoon limit, while delivering satisfying crunch and taste.

Brand manager Shaaista Kathree noted: “A growing number of individuals are looking to cut back on sugar, and the demand for lower or zero cane sugar cereals continues to rise; our new Zero Granola Crunch variant combines smart nutrition with the great taste people expect.”

It joins the Original variant (coconut and cinnamon), fueling category growth: the Zero line surged 104%, with Granola Crunch exploding over 3,800%.

Packed with protein, dietary fibre, and gut-friendly pre/probiotics, the granola supports digestion, sustained energy, and wellness amid rising health awareness.

Its whole-food focus appeals to diabetics (endorsed by Diabetes South Africa) and fitness enthusiasts, positioning Futurelife as a leader in clean-label innovation.

Priced affordably, it’s rolling out nationwide via retailers like Pick’n Pay and Makro, targeting busy families and health-conscious shoppers.

This launch reflects South Africa’s breakfast market shift toward functional foods, which are growing 8% annually, driven by urbanization and sugar taxes.

Futurelife’s emphasis on local grains like oats and barley boosts agribusiness, aiding smallholder farmers and sustainable sourcing in a water-stressed region.

For industry analysts, the variant exemplifies how no-added-sugar claims, backed by natural fruit sweetness, drive loyalty in competitive aisles against global giants.

As obesity and diabetes rise, such products promote balanced diets without compromise, with Futurelife eyeing further Zero expansions.
