Cargill opens US$32 M dairy feed plant in India to boost local production

Spread over 15 acres, with an annual production capacity of 400,000 metric tons, the new facility will be Cargill’s largest dairy feed plant in South Asia.

INDIA – Cargill Animal Nutrition & Health has inaugurated a state-of-the-art dairy feed plant in Wazirabad, Punjab, marking a significant expansion of its operations in India.

The facility, built with an investment of ₹300 crore (US$32.6 million), is designed to deliver science-based dairy nutrition at scale and provide farmers with consistent access to high-quality feed solutions.

Spread across 15 acres, the plant has an annual production capacity of 400,000 metric tons, making it Cargill’s largest dairy feed facility in South Asia and its second plant in Punjab, following the Bathinda facility.

The expansion is expected to create over 1,000 direct and indirect jobs, contributing to local livelihoods and supporting rising demand in the region’s core dairy markets. Products will be marketed under the Provimi and Purina brands and serve dairy farmers, producers, and feed mills.

Strategically located in one of North India’s most productive dairy belts, the Wazirabad plant brings production closer to farming communities.

The facility uses advanced automation and modern technology to produce feed for young animals and milking cows.

By ensuring reliable access to safe, quality feed, the plant aims to improve milk yields, animal health, and farmer incomes, strengthening the overall dairy value chain.

“Punjab continues to be a leader in India’s agricultural and dairy landscape, supported by its progressive farmers and strong infrastructure,” said Sanjeev Arora, Minister of Industries & Commerce, Punjab.

He added that investments from global companies like Cargill will further strengthen the state’s industrial ecosystem and create employment opportunities for local communities, supporting rural livelihoods.”

Cargill’s expansion aligns with India’s “Make in India” agenda, building on decades of work with Indian farmers through Provimi and Purina brands.

Alongside the Bathinda plant, the Wazirabad facility enhances local manufacturing, supports skill development, and boosts economic activity in surrounding communities.

Designed to global standards for workplace safety, biosecurity, and product quality, the plant reflects Cargill’s commitment to operational integrity and sustainable food systems.

By expanding our manufacturing presence closer to key dairy regions of Punjab, farmers will have consistent access to high-quality feed complying with BIS guidelines. This will enhance supply reliability, farm profitability, and local employment,” said Ravinder Balain, president, Cargill India and senior managing director, Cargill Animal Nutrition & Health, India.

India has been the world’s largest milk producer for several years, accounting for more than one-quarter of global output. Dairy remains the country’s largest agricultural product, contributing around 5% to the national economy.
