Strategically located adjacent to deep-water berths, the warehouse can accommodate vessels of up to 80,000 tonnes
UK – Viterra Ltd. and Associated British Ports (ABP) have announced the completion of a £10 million (US$12.9 million) state-of-the-art warehouse at the Humber International Terminal (HIT) in the Port of Immingham.
This new facility significantly enhances the port’s capacity to handle agricultural commodities, bringing the total storage capacity to approximately 75,000 tonnes.
The newly constructed Shed 36 complements the existing Shed 35, which commenced operations in 2022. Together, these facilities bolster Viterra’s ability to manage a diverse range of imported commodities efficiently and reliably.
Strategically located adjacent to deep-water berths, the warehouse can accommodate vessels of up to 80,000 tonnes, facilitating seamless import and export operations.
Designed and built entirely by ABP’s in-house projects team, the warehouse measures 163 meters by 45 meters and features a steel portal frame with reinforced concrete walls standing six meters high.
In addition, the facility ensures safe storage of all food-grade agribulks, including animal feeds constructed to meet DSEAR and TASCC standards.
Advanced safety features include electrical systems designed for explosive atmospheres and a Tekpro CS90 automated sampling spear for safer and more efficient grain sampling.
“This significant investment underscores our commitment to keeping Britain trading and meets the demands of our valued customers,” said Andrew Dawes, Regional Director of the Humber ports.
“Managing the project in-house ensures ABP provides a value-added service to companies who choose us as their port of choice for business,” he added.
James Maw, Managing Director of Viterra, expressed satisfaction with the collaboration: “We’re pleased to announce the expansion of our storage and handling capacity in the UK’s premier Port of Immingham. The ABP in-house project team has delivered a fantastic facility, enhancing our capabilities for both import and export business.”
The Port of Immingham, located in North Lincolnshire, is the UK’s largest port by tonnage volume, playing a crucial role in supporting import and export supply chains across Europe and beyond.
ABP has invested significantly in grain handling operations across its UK ports, including purchasing new cranes, refurbishing existing ones, and upgrading landside equipment to meet growing customer demand.
