Kenya’s heavy dependence on imported rice is creating a major opportunity for domestic farmers and processors, with a new market-led private-sector initiative seeking to expand production, strengthen post-harvest handling and increase local milling capacity.

A central component of the project is a soybean crushing unit with a processing capacity of 300 tonnes per day.

The framework is designed to provide immediate financial and policy support to countries facing heightened vulnerabilities while strengthening their capacity to withstand future external shocks.

The initiative brings together Olam Agri’s existing baker-development programmes across several African markets under a broader platform designed to expand skills development and economic opportunities in the baking sector.

The new phase follows three previous stages of PAPRIZ that helped improve farmers’ technical skills, promote better cultivation practices and increase rice productivity.
