Grupo Bimbo strengthens nutritional profile of baked foods

The company says 97% of its white bread, baked items, bagels and English muffins now contain at least 2 grams of dietary fiber per 100 grams of product.

MEXICO – Grupo Bimbo, one of the world’s largest baking companies, is expanding efforts to improve the nutritional quality of its bread and baked products, with 98% of its daily consumption portfolio now meeting the company’s Positive Nutrition standard.

Announced on 15 October 2026 to coincide with World Bread Day, the milestone covers breads, sweet baked goods, English muffins and savoury bagels.

The company also reported that 48% of its total net sales come from products with optimal nutritional quality, reflecting its continued investment in recipe reformulation and product development.

The nutritional improvement programme focuses on increasing dietary fibre, protein, whole grains and vitamin content while reducing sodium, added sugars, saturated fats and trans fats.

The approach forms part of a product transformation strategy that Grupo Bimbo has pursued for more than two decades to respond to changing consumer preferences for convenient foods with improved nutritional profiles.

According to the company, 97% of its white breads, baked goods, bagels and English muffins now contain at least 2 grammes of dietary fibre per 100 grammes of product.

The initiative aims to improve the nutritional contribution of frequently consumed bakery products while maintaining taste, quality and accessibility.

By 2027, the company aims for its breads, baked goods, English muffins and savoury bagels to contain fewer than 15 ingredients, all of which should be easily recognizable to consumers.

The target reflects growing industry interest in simpler recipes and greater transparency in food labelling.

A further goal is to ensure that 100% of its white breads and baked goods provide at least 3 grammes of fibre per 100 grammes by 2030.

This threshold corresponds to the Codex Alimentarius benchmark cited by the company for classifying a product as a source of fibre.

The company said its packaged breads and savoury baked goods are produced without preservatives or artificial colourants.

It also uses flour fortified with iron, folic acid and B vitamins in line with applicable public health fortification policies.

Grupo Bimbo’s nutrition efforts have received recognition from the Access to Nutrition Initiative (ATNi).

In its 2024 assessment, the company ranked fourth globally among food companies evaluated for overall nutrition performance and achieved the highest score in the Accessible Nutrition category.

The company assesses its Positive Nutrition products using the Health Star Rating system, which evaluates packaged foods on a scale of 0.5 to five stars.

Products achieving at least 3.5 stars qualify as having optimal nutritional quality under its criteria.

Through continued research, reformulation and innovation, Grupo Bimbo aims to strengthen the nutritional value of everyday bakery products while maintaining affordability and meeting evolving consumer expectations.
