Symrise expands Barcelona Food & Beverage Hub, reports solid Q1FY2026 performance

The opening represents a major investment in the region, aimed at shortening distances between production and key markets while bolstering the company’s technical capabilities.

SPAIN – Symrise AG has taken a significant step to reinforce its regional footprint in Southern Europe, opening its upgraded Food & Beverage site in Parets del Vallès, near Barcelona, thereby strategically enhancing production capacity for powdered food and beverage solutions across Southern Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

The move comes alongside the company’s first-quarter financial results, which pointed to resilience across its core business divisions despite a challenging global environment.

The investment expands capacity for powdered food and beverage solutions and strengthens application expertise, connecting Southern Europe with Africa and the Middle East.

The strategic timing of the upgrade reflects growing regional demand, as Southern Europe is growing fast and serves as a hub for food and beverage innovation, with Spain often linking European markets to North Africa and the Middle East.

Among the key upgrades at the site, Symrise installed a new large-scale mixing plant to expand capacity for powdered products, especially for culinary, snacks, dry beverage, and sweet applications.

Modernized development, application, and quality labs speed up prototyping, testing, and optimization across categories.

Additionally, dedicated application labs for ready meals and processed meat solutions expand local technical support, helping customers solve challenges, refine sensory profiles, and accelerate market readiness.

Sustainability has also been woven into the fabric of the upgraded facility. The Barcelona-area site integrates sustainability into everyday operations, including solar panels and a water-reuse system to reduce waste and support responsible resource use.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Lilian Regnier, President Food & Beverage EAME, said the investment “combines scale, flexibility, and proximity helping customers move innovations to market with confidence while reinforcing our regional presence in Iberia.”

Liam Pickup, Vice President Food & Beverage Europe, added: “The upgraded production and application capabilities support growth across savory and beverage powders while embedding sustainability into daily operations.”

On the financial front, Symrise reported an organic sales decline of 0.4% for the first quarter of 2026, with sales of approximately €1,249 million (US$1,464.18M) compared to €1,317 million (US$1,543.70M) in the prior-year period, a result described as stronger than anticipated, with solid performance in the Taste, Nutrition & Health Segment, and Scent & Care Segment.

The Taste, Nutrition & Health segment was a standout performer, achieving 1.7% organic growth, driven by strong demand in the Food & Beverage and Pet Food divisions.

Reported sales were €749 million (US$877.93M) compared with €779 million (US$913.16M) in the prior-year period.

The Food & Beverage Division delivered low-single‑digit organic sales growth against demanding prior‑year comparables, driven by mid‑single‑digit growth in Naturals and Savoury and low-single‑digit growth in Beverages.

The Pet Food Division achieved low-single‑digit organic sales growth, driven by low-single‑digit growth in Pet Palatability. Pet Nutrition reported a slight organic decline, with positive volumes, as prices continued to normalize.

Meanwhile, the Scent & Care segment saw a 3.4% organic decline, primarily due to pricing pressures and high prior-year comparables in the UV filter business.

Despite regional headwinds in Europe, Symrise reaffirmed its full-year 2026 outlook, projecting organic sales growth between 2.0% and 4.0%.

The company is currently accelerating its “ONE SYM” transformation program, which aims to unlock structural cost savings and reinvest in organic growth opportunities.
