Scooter’s Pizza returns to South Africa

The relaunch has already sparked nostalgia among longtime fans and curiosity among new customers, with social media buzzing about the return of the homegrown pizza brand.

SOUTH AFRICA – Scooter’s Pizza, once a beloved name in South Africa’s fast-food scene, has officially relaunched its brand with the opening of a new store in Melville, Johannesburg, on October 21, 2025.

This marks a major comeback nearly a decade after the brand was liquidated by its former owner, Taste Holdings, which had pivoted to the Domino’s Pizza franchise.

Initially founded in 2000, Scooter’s Pizza quickly gained popularity for its bold “39-minute delivery or it’s free” promise. This marketing strategy resonated with South African consumers and set the brand apart in a competitive market.

However, its momentum was halted when Taste Holdings rebranded its outlets to Domino’s, leading to the disappearance of Scooter’s from the local food landscape.

Now, the brand is being revived by Juan Engelbrecht, one of its original expansion partners, who has acquired the rights and is spearheading the relaunch through a franchising model.

Engelbrecht’s vision is to restore Scooter’s Pizza to its former glory while adapting to modern consumer expectations.

“We’re bringing back a South African classic with a fresh look and renewed energy,” Engelbrecht said during the launch event.

The new Melville store features updated branding and a refreshed menu, while retaining the iconic 39-minute delivery guarantee.

The relaunch has already sparked nostalgia among longtime fans and curiosity among new customers, with social media buzzing about the return of the homegrown pizza brand.

Scooter’s Pizza plans to expand its footprint across South Africa through franchised outlets, aiming to tap into the growing demand for fast, reliable, and locally rooted food options.

The company is also exploring digital ordering platforms and delivery partnerships to enhance customer convenience.

Industry analysts view the relaunch as a strategic move in a market that has seen increased competition from global chains and local startups.

By leveraging its legacy and focusing on speed and quality, Scooter’s Pizza hopes to reclaim its place in South Africa’s fast-food hierarchy.
