Portuguese Pastry Brand Manteigaria opens first Hong Kong bakery

Manteigaria also signalled ambitious local growth plans, aiming to open six locations in Hong Kong by the end of 2027, with InvestHK providing market support and supplier introductions to facilitate the rollout.

HONG KONG – Renowned Portuguese bakery brand Manteigaria has officially entered the local culinary market, launching its first flagship branch in the heart of Central on Queen’s Road Central.

Celebrated globally for its artisanal dedication to crafting authentic Pastéis de Nata (original Portuguese custard tarts), the Lisbon-born bakery’s arrival marks a highly anticipated milestone in its international expansion.

The move strategically capitalizes on the city’s deeply rooted, historic love for egg tarts while positioning the brand for wider recognition across the Asian market.

Operating under the restaurant group Portugália Restauração, which boasts over a century of food and beverage heritage, Manteigaria has swiftly built a cult following since its inception in 2014.

The brand now manages over 20 highly successful locations spanning Portugal, France, Spain, and Macao.

Its grand debut on Hong Kong Island introduces a specialized open-kitchen concept that allows daily commuters and dessert enthusiasts to observe the entire production process firsthand, from the meticulous, hand-folding pattern of the multi-layered puff pastry to the precise pouring of the signature rich custard filling.

The brand’s expansion plans reflect immense confidence in the resilience and cosmopolitan appetite of the local gastronomic landscape.

Company leaders announced an ambitious blueprint to open six distinct locations across the territory by the conclusion of 2027.

To capture the full cultural experience of an authentic Lisbon neighbourhood, the Central storefront honours the long-standing tradition of ringing a physical bell outside the entrance, the exact moment a fresh, piping-hot batch of pastries slides out of the high-heat Italian ovens.

Local government promotion agency Invest Hong Kong worked closely alongside the hospitality group to coordinate the market entry, providing critical geographic data, regional consumer insights, and immediate access to top-tier local supplier networks.

Representatives noted that the city’s unique identity as a cultural crossroads makes it the ultimate stage for foreign heritage brands seeking rapid growth.

Unlike local variations that lean heavily on firm, egg-forward bases, Manteigaria’s tarts are defined by a shatteringly crisp shell and a velvety centre, complete with countertop shakers of cinnamon and powdered sugar for authentic styling.
