PepsiCo sets new year to achieve net-zero emissions target

PepsiCo has also expanded its focus on regenerative agriculture and modified particular goals on emissions and packaging.

USA – Due to external circumstances, PepsiCo has delayed its objective of achieving net-zero emissions by ten years, hoping to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier, compared to the previously set goal of 2040, with a baseline set in 2015.

PepsiCo’s 2050 target is linked to its specific goals for Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. According to the corporation, the objectives are in line with sectoral recommendations from the Science Based Targets project.

In comparison to a baseline set for 2022, the company hopes to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% by 2030. PepsiCo had set a 75% reduction by the same year against a 2015 baseline.

PepsiCo has identified two categories of Scope 3 emissions, which are frequently the most difficult for businesses to address, in accordance with SBTi guidelines: Energy and Industry (E&I) and Forests, Land, and Agriculture (FLAG).

In contrast to a prior target of a 40% reduction by 2030 against a 2015 baseline, the organization is aiming for a 42% reduction in E&I emissions by 2030 compared to 2022 levels.

A new baseline is part of PepsiCo’s FLAG emissions target. When compared to a baseline set in 2022, the corporation wants to reduce these emissions by 30% by 2030. Its prior goal was to reduce by 40% by 2030 compared to 2015.

The company announced improvements that would reduce the amount of recycled and virgin plastic it uses. Additionally, it failed to meet its goal for reusable packaging.

Through 2030, PepsiCo wants to reduce its consumption of virgin plastic by an average of 2% annually. By the same year, the corporation had previously set a 20% reduction in non-renewable sources.

By 2035 or earlier, the business wants to reduce its utilization of recycled content by at least 40%. By 2030, it had aimed to use 50% recycled content.

By 2030, PepsiCo aimed to use reusable models for 20% of all beverage servings, however this goal has since been abandoned.

Reusable, recyclable, or compostable (RRC) packaging by design will be the company’s overarching goal. PepsiCo wants to have at least 97% of its main and secondary packaging in major packaging markets to be RRC packaging by design by 2030.

After setting a target of seven million acres for regenerative agriculture, PepsiCo has expanded that objective to ten million acres by 2030. About 3.5 million acres have already been delivered, according to the business.
