Nestlé expands breakfast cereal range enriched with protein

Nestlé positions both launches as part of a broader strategy to offer more nutritionally balanced options without sacrificing the indulgent flavors that made the brands popular.

FRANCE – Nestlé has expanded its breakfast cereal portfolio with the launch of Chocapic Protein and Lion Protein, two new variants of its iconic chocolate‑flavored cereals enriched with extra protein.

The move positions Nestlé to tap into the fast‑growing “high‑protein” breakfast trend while retaining the nostalgic taste that has made Chocapic and Lion household names across Europe.

Chocapic Protein keeps the brand’s signature chocolate flavor but introduces a new waffle‑shaped cereal and is marketed as a source of protein, fortified with seven vitamins and two minerals and carrying a Nutri‑Score A on pack.

Chocapic Protein is fortified with a source of 7 vitamins and 2 minerals, including iron, which is crucial for normal cognitive development in children and calcium and vitamin D, which support normal growth and development of bone.

Similarly, Lion Protein maintains the original caramel‑and‑chocolate profile while adding a modest protein boost, targeting consumers who want a more nutritionally functional breakfast without switching from their favourite childhood cereal.

Technical analysis of the formulations indicates that both cereals deliver only a small increase in protein per portion, around 5% more by weight compared with classic versions, roughly an extra 1-2 grams of protein per 30‑gram serving.

Nestlé also retains key ingredients such as whole grain, calcium, and iron, which were already present in prior recipes, and emphasizes that the new variants are designed mainly for adults rather than children.

The launch aligns with rising consumer demand for protein‑rich options across yogurt, snacks, and now breakfast cereals, a sector where Nestlé has been steadily reformulating products to reduce sugar and improve overall nutrition profiles.

Chocapic Protein and Lion Protein are rolling out first in major European markets, including France, with pack sizes and price points similar to those of the original lines, despite slight pack‑weight reductions.

Nestlé’s communications around the rollout indicate an initial market focus on mainstream retail channels and family households, with packaging and marketing emphasizing both taste and nutritional credentials.

The company has not published a detailed global rollout timetable in the materials cited, but the product pages and trade coverage suggest the launches will be phased across selected markets while Nestlé monitors consumer response and adjusts distribution plans accordingly.
