Intersnack commits US$98M (€85M) to Alsbach Plant to expand production capacity

The investment will fund a 10,000-square-meter extension to the Alsbach plant.

GERMANY – Intersnack, a Germany-based snack giant, has announced a major €85 million (US$98M) investment in its Alsbach production facility, signaling a bold step toward expanding capacity.

The investment aims not only to modernise the plant in Alsbach for the expansion of production capacities but also to enhance sustainability.

The move reflects the company’s long-term commitment to innovation, environmental responsibility, and job security within the salty snacks sector.

The investment will fund a 10,000-square-meter extension to the Alsbach plant, located near Darmstadt in southwest Germany.

This expansion includes a state-of-the-art production hall and an integrated logistics area, designed to streamline operations and accommodate growing demand for Intersnack’s popular brands.

At its manufacturing facility, Intersnack produces a variety of snacks under well-known brands such as Funny-frisch, Pom-Bär, and Chio. Their product lineup includes items like Goldfischli, Popcorn, Popchips, and Lentil Chips.

A standout feature of the project is its sustainability focus. Intersnack plans to transition the facility’s energy supply from gas to renewable electricity, aiming to cut CO₂ emissions by more than 50%.

This shift will be supported by a Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) signed in April 2025, which backs the development of a large-scale solar park in Spain.

“As one of the market leaders in the salty snacks category, we want to continue our growth of recent years. Important prerequisites for this are sufficient capacities, state-of-the-art production technologies and qualified and committed employees. For this reason, we are investing in a long-term and secure future for the Alsbach site,” expressed Jan van den Broek, Managing Director of Operations for Intersnack Germany.

The expansion will safeguard the jobs of the 470 employees currently working at the Alsbach facility and create new opportunities for future growth.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2026, with operations expected to ramp up by 2028.

Intersnack’s investment comes on the heels of its acquisition of the Whole Earth peanut butter brand in 2024, further diversifying its portfolio and reinforcing its position in the European snack market.

With five production sites across Germany and a growing international footprint, Intersnack’s latest move underscores its ambition to lead not just in product innovation but also in sustainable manufacturing.

The Alsbach upgrade is more than a facility expansion; it’s a statement of intent to shape the future of snacking through responsible growth and operational excellence.
