Frontier completes acquisition of Aberdeen Grain

The transaction brings Aberdeen Grain’s 65,000-tonne storage and drying facility Frontier’s ownership and expands the company’s infrastructure in one of Scotland’s key cereal-producing regions.

UK – Major UK agronomy and grain trading business Frontier Agriculture has formally completed its acquisition of Aberdeen Grain’s primary Whiterashes grain storage and drying facility in north-east Scotland.

The successful transaction secures long-term infrastructure, operational continuity, and critical market access for regional cereal growers, following full due diligence and unanimous member approval.

Under the terms of the agreement, Frontier assumes full ownership of the strategic Whiterashes site near Aberdeen, which features an extensive storage capacity of approximately 65,000 tonnes.

The transition allows the more than 180 farmer-members of Aberdeen Grain to retain uninterrupted access to the storage, drying, and handling facilities on terms mirroring their existing multi-year agreements. Grain handling, intake logistics, and local customer support will continue seamlessly without operational delays.

As part of the acquisition, existing site staff have transferred to Frontier under Transfer of Undertakings Protection of Employment (TUPE) regulations, preserving vital local expertise and operational knowledge at the Whiterashes plant.

Following the legal completion of the property and asset transfer, the farmer-owned Aberdeen Grain co-operative will now enter a standard Member Voluntary Liquidation process to formally wind up the entity, with financial returns distributed to members based on their historical shareholding and committed tonnage allocations.

Frontier Agriculture leadership highlighted that expanding its footprint in Scotland reinforces its overarching commitment to providing UK arable farmers with robust supply chain infrastructure, crop marketing services, and agronomic support.

By absorbing the site into its national network, Frontier aims to provide regional growers with greater market stability and direct commercial routes to domestic and international end-users.

While industry bodies like NFU Scotland previously noted the ongoing structural consolidation within the UK agricultural merchanting sector, local leadership affirmed that the acquisition represents the best possible outcome for safeguarding the site’s future, protecting local jobs, and delivering commercial certainty to Scottish growers in a volatile global grain market.

Frontier Agriculture was founded in 2005 as a joint venture between Cargill PLC and Associated British Foods. It is a leading crop production and grain marketing business in the UK.

Prior to the acquisition, the company had 13 grain storage and drying facilities across Great Britain, according to its 2025 annual report.
