Ferrero plans to invest US$321M in Ontario plant expansion

The investment will significantly enhance the manufacturing capabilities and capacity of the Brantford facility.

CANADA – The Ferrero Group is investing C$445 million (approximately US$321M) to expand and upgrade its production facility in Brantford, Ontario to support the manufacture of new products, including the company’s first-ever launch outside of Europe.

The expansion plans involve the production of Nutella Biscuits and Ferrero Rocher Chocolate Squares at the Brantford plant.

Notably, this will be the first time Nutella Biscuits are manufactured outside of Europe, marking Ferrero’s debut of new products outside the continent, as announced by the Ontario provincial government on April 11.

By incorporating Internet of Things (IoT) technology and advanced robotics, the company aims to digitize production processes and improve productivity.

“This expansion reflects Ferrero’s strong momentum in the region and will enhance our manufacturing capabilities and supply chain,” stated Omar Zausa, president of Ferrero Canada.

He also mentioned that this investment will accelerate the growth of Ferrero’s power brands, Nutella and Ferrero Rocher, further establishing the company’s presence in retail stores.

The Ontario government is contributing C$36 million to the project through the Invest Ontario Fund. They have indicated that Ferrero is committed to sourcing its key ingredients and packaging materials locally within Ontario.

“We are thankful for the continued support from the province and the city of Brantford, which recognize the valuable contributions of the food industry,” said Eric Houdet, senior vice president of Canada Industrial at the Brantford plant for Ferrero Canada.

He added that as the largest employer in Brantford, this investment and the creation of hundreds of new jobs will bolster the local economy and help the company provide delightful treats to more people worldwide.

Ferrero has been operating the Brantford plant for nearly two decades. With the upcoming expansion and upgrades, the company plans to add 500 new jobs at the facility, increasing its total workforce in the province to 1,800 employees.

“Ferrero Canada’s decision to expand its operations and create new, well-paying jobs in Brantford showcases Ontario’s appeal as a preferred location for global agribusinesses,” said Trevor Jones, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness for Ontario.

Ferrero Group is an Italian multinational company owned by the Ferrero family, with headquarters in Alba. Founded in 1946, it is the second biggest chocolate producer and confectionery company in the world.
