SAFCO installs solar power to drive its sustainability efforts

Safco’s commitment to sustainability is driving meaningful change for a brighter, greener future.

UAE – SAFCO, International has announced the installation of a 409 kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) roof project at its Dubai Industrial City facility, marking a significant advancement in the company’s sustainability efforts.

This state-of-the-art solar project is expected to generate 666,348 kWh of clean, renewable energy annually, allowing SAFCO to power its operations with minimal environmental impact.

With an estimated reduction of 286.5 tons of CO₂ emissions each year, the company is not only lowering its carbon footprint but also actively contributing to a cleaner, greener future for all.

The company has expressed its sincere gratitude to all those involved and has reiterated its dedication to advancing its sustainability initiatives.

Founded in 1994 as a family business, SAFCO is a leading food producer based in Dubai. The company offers a wide variety of food products, including the Esperance brand, which features an extensive range of pastry chocolates, frozen delicacies, bread, baking ingredients, and pastry decorations. Their Soul brand focuses on organic quinoa.

The environmentally friendly and sustainable food market is expected to experience significant growth in the coming years, increasing from US$132.89B in 2025 to US$172.84B in 2029, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.8%.

This growth is attributed to rising consumer awareness and education, a growing preference for healthier and ethical food choices, and an increased focus on health and wellness. Additionally, there is a rising consumer demand for ethically sourced food products.

Key trends in this growth period include certification standards, the expansion of regenerative agriculture, advancements in food waste reduction technologies, development of food cooperatives and collective purchasing initiatives, and innovations in production lines.

According to a 2021 study by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the food industry accounts for more than one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, making it a target for emissions reduction campaigns.

Unfortunately, the industry has lagged behind others in terms of sustainability and especially in decarbonization. For instance, there were no food industry representatives among Earth.org’s top 50 sustainable companies for 2021.

A significant factor contributing to this lag is the complex value chain from farm to fork, which includes processing, distribution, and retail networks.

The growing demand for organic produce is anticipated to further propel the growth of the environmentally friendly and sustainable food market.

For example, according to the Organic Trade Association, organic food sales in the United States reached a record US$56.4B in 2021, marking a 12.4% increase from the previous year.
