NETHERLANDS – The Netherlands is set to become Europe’s leading hub for protein innovation with the launch of a major new Food Innovation Park in Ede, located in the heart of the renowned FoodValley Region.
Announced on September 18, 2025, the initiative aims to accelerate the transition toward sustainable protein sources by providing world-class facilities for research, testing, and commercial scaling.
The park is being developed on the NIZO site, a strategic location that will bring together start-ups, scale-ups, corporates, and research institutions.
Its core infrastructure includes Europe’s largest independent food-grade pilot plant and the newly launched Biotechnology Fermentation Factory (BFF), both designed to support the development of plant-based, algae-derived, and fermentation-based proteins.
“Our goal is clear: to become Europe’s leading ecosystem for scaling alternative proteins and driving the food transition,” said Nikolaas Vles, CEO of NIZO.
The park complements the work of Wageningen University & Research, which focuses on fundamental food science.
While Wageningen leads in academic research, Ede’s Park will specialize in testing, scaling, and preparing innovations for market entry, creating a seamless pipeline from lab to shelf.
The initiative is backed by a coalition of regional and national stakeholders, including the Province of Gelderland, Municipality of Ede, FoodValley Region, and Oost NL.
Political and industry leaders, such as Helga Witjes, Arnold Versteeg, and Bert Fintelman, have voiced strong support, emphasizing the park’s role in building a future-proof food system.
With global protein consumption under scrutiny due to the environmental impact of meat and dairy, the Ede Park offers a timely solution.
Its facilities will enable innovators to transform lab discoveries into safe, scalable food products, aligning with Europe’s sustainability goals and consumer demand for healthier alternatives.
The next phase of development will focus on property expansion and the creation of a dedicated facility organization.
A potential spin-off of the pilot plant into an independent entity is also under consideration to ensure broad accessibility and long-term impact.
Together with Wageningen and the nearby Food Innovation District, the Ede Park forms a dynamic triangle of knowledge, entrepreneurship, and production, solidifying the Netherlands’ reputation as a global leader in agri-food innovation.
