NoPalm Ingredients, NIZO Food Research sign agreement for new facility in the Netherlands

The facility will initially produce several hundred metric tons annually, with plans to scale beyond 1,200 metric tons by 2028.

NETHERLANDS – NoPalm Ingredients, a Dutch biotech startup that produces sustainable, fermentation-based oils and fats as an alternative to palm oil for the food and cosmetics industries, has formed a strategic alliance with NIZO Food Research, a leading contract research organization (CRO) specializing in innovation for the global food and health industries, to establish a new industrial-scale facility at NIZO Food Innovation Campus in Ede, the Netherlands.

The move marks a pivotal shift from pilot operations to full-scale commercial production of sustainable, yeast-derived oil alternatives.

NoPalm Ingredients, known for its patented fermentation technology that upcycles agri-food sidestreams into functional fats and oils, will now consolidate its entire production process under one roof.

Previously fragmented across multiple sites, the new setup streamlines operations, reduces costs, and accelerates time-to-market.

The facility will initially produce several hundred metric tons annually, with plans to scale beyond 1,200 metric tons by 2028.

The partnership is backed by strong regional support, including the Province of Gelderland and the city of Ede, and is designed to serve both food manufacturers and ingredient innovators seeking clean-label, deforestation-free alternatives to tropical oils.

Customers will be able to test new raw materials, optimize formulations, and integrate NoPalm’s circular oils into their supply chains.

The yeast-based oil developed by NoPalm offers a compelling alternative to conventional palm oil, featuring 90% lower CO₂ emissions and 99% less land use, offering a viable path for the food industry to reduce its dependence on deforestation-linked tropical oils.

It’s also cost-competitive, making it viable for large-scale adoption across food, cosmetics, and personal care sectors.

With industrial trials already underway, the first commercial batches are expected to be available in late 2026.

As global demand for ethical, traceable ingredients intensifies, this partnership signals a new era for palm oil alternatives.

By combining fermentation expertise, circular economy principles, and industrial readiness, NoPalm and NIZO are positioned to deliver scalable solutions that meet both environmental and commercial imperatives.

This innovation comes at a critical time when global demand for palm oil is rising and regulatory environments are tightening, making solutions like NoPalm’s yeast oils essential for a sustainable future in food production.
