Cargill opens canola plant in Regina to expand processing and market access

The new site raises local demand for canola and links farmers to food and fuel markets worldwide.

CANADA – Cargill has opened a new canola processing plant in Regina, Saskatchewan, adding to its footprint in Canada and raising demand for locally grown crops.

The facility can process 1 million metric tonnes of canola each year. This move allows more of the crop to be refined within Canada into products such as cooking oil, renewable fuel feedstock, and high protein meal for animal feed. The plant will serve farmers across Saskatchewan and Western Manitoba.

“This facility strengthens our ability to connect Canadian farmers to growing global demand for food and renewable fuels,” said Jeff Vassart, president of Cargill Canada. “By expanding processing capacity in Saskatchewan, we’re creating more opportunities for farmers while helping ensure Canada remains competitive in rapidly evolving global markets.”

Global demand for lower carbon energy continues to rise, and canola plays a key role as a feedstock for biofuels. The Regina plant supports this shift by allowing more value to stay within the country instead of exporting raw seed. It also helps improve supply chain flow for both farmers and buyers.

Cargill has also added features to ease delivery for farmers. The site includes dual receiving lanes, scheduled deliveries, and faster handling systems. These changes aim to reduce wait times and improve planning for growers.

The plant sits within Saskatchewan’s Global Transportation Hub, giving it strong rail links to both local and export markets. The project supports more than 100 jobs through full time roles and contract work, adding income to the local economy.

Cargill continues to grow its agriculture business in Canada. The company already runs canola plants in Camrose, Alberta, and Clavet, Saskatchewan, and offers programs that help farmers reach global buyers.

This development comes as Cargill also marks 30 years of its Gemini edible oil brand in India. The company recently opened its Kurkumbh plant in Maharashtra to the public, where leaders showed how products are made and tested for quality.

“With a strong legacy of over 30 years, Gemini is known for its unshakable consumer trust and superior product quality,” said Dheeraj Talreja, vice president and managing director for South Asia.

At the same time, a report by Crisil Ratings shows that India’s sunflower oil market may slow, with sales expected to drop by about 10 percent this financial year.
