The acquisition positions Calbee to tap into the increasing U.S. plant-based market, where tofu is gaining traction among consumers seeking clean-label, protein-rich alternatives.

USA – Calbee, Inc., a global leader in snacks and food products headquartered in Japan, has acquired a 58% majority stake in Hodo, a leading U.S. producer of organic tofu and plant-based proteins, marking a strategic leap into the fast-growing American health food sector.
The deal is part of Calbee’s “Change 2025” transformation plan, which emphasizes global expansion and a deeper focus on food and health innovation.
Founded in 2004 and headquartered in Oakland, California, Hodo has built a reputation for crafting high-quality tofu, yuba, and plant-based alternatives using organic, non-GMO soybeans.
Its products are protein-rich, gluten-free, and widely distributed across retail and foodservice channels, including partnerships with Chipotle and Michelin-honoured chefs.
Calbee’s CEO Makoto Ehara highlighted the strategic importance of the acquisition: “As demand for sustainable foods grows, tofu is increasingly valued by health-conscious consumers. Our vision is to build a global portfolio of foods that are enjoyable and meaningful.”
In a complementary move, Sagamiya Foods, a respected Japanese tofu manufacturer, has acquired a 10% minority stake in Hodo.
Sagamiya will provide technical support to help expand tofu culture in the U.S., blending traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation.
Hodo’s founder, Minh Tsai, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership: “We blend tradition and innovation to create foods for consumers who want healthier options without compromising on taste. We’re excited for Calbee’s vision and their commitment to better-for-you foods.”
The acquisition positions Calbee to tap into the increasing U.S. plant-based market, where tofu is gaining traction among consumers seeking clean-label, protein-rich alternatives.
It also diversifies Calbee’s portfolio beyond its core snack categories, such as cereals, chips, and rice-based snacks, into functional foods aligned with wellness and sustainability trends.
With Hodo’s strong brand equity and Calbee’s global reach, the partnership is expected to accelerate product innovation, expand distribution, and introduce new tofu-based offerings to mainstream audiences.
The move signals a broader shift in Calbee’s strategy, from indulgent snacking to purposeful nutrition anchored in environmental consciousness and consumer well-being.
As the plant-based movement continues to reshape global food systems, Calbee’s investment in Hodo underscores its commitment to meeting modern food trends through sustainable, high-quality plant-based offerings.
