Bühler joins Millers for Nutrition Coalition as processing solutions provider

SWITZERLAND – Bühler, a global leader in grain processing and technology solutions, has joined the Millers for Nutrition coalition, an alliance dedicated to supporting millers in fortifying staple foods with essential nutrients.

The initiative targets improving nutrition for 1 billion people globally by 2026, focusing on addressing malnutrition, which affects approximately 3 billion individuals worldwide.

The coalition brings together millers and technical partners to enhance food safety, nutritional quality, and operational efficiencies.

Bühler, known for its expertise in grain processing, has pledged to provide advanced technology, training, and implementation support to millers involved in fortifying wheat flour, maize flour, edible oil, and rice.

“We’re delighted Bühler has joined us as a Food Processing Solutions Provider,” said Riz Yusufali, program director of Millers for Nutrition.

“As our millers continue to evolve, they need a wider variety of support services. Bühler’s world-class expertise will help enhance their business while improving food safety and nutrition,” Riz added.

The coalition’s collaborative model connects stakeholders from across the value chain, enabling access to best-in-class technical assistance and tools.

Partners include strategic fortification leaders such as BASF, DSM-firmenich, and BioAnalyt, as well as regional players like Hexagon Nutrition and Piramal. These collaborations aim to optimize food processing practices, boost business sustainability, and contribute to societal well-being.

The coalition operates in eight focus countries, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Tanzania, where it seeks to improve access to fortified staple foods through partnerships with millers, suppliers, social enterprises, and technical experts.

Fortification involves adding micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals to commonly consumed foods, a proven strategy for combating nutrient deficiencies.

“Food fortification is one of the most effective ways to address the long-standing challenge of malnutrition. By joining the coalition, we aim to effectively address this issue,” said Stefan Birrer, head of Business Area Milling Solutions at Bühler.

Bühler’s involvement includes equipping mills with innovative micro-dosing technology for precise nutrient integration, as well as providing on-the-ground technical support and training. Its African Milling School in Nairobi, Kenya, has become a key resource for millers, training over 1,500 professionals from more than 25 countries since its inception in 2015.

Powered by TechnoServe and funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the coalition exemplifies how public-private partnerships can address global challenges. Bühler’s involvement underscores the critical role technology and training play in creating scalable and sustainable solutions to improve global nutrition.
