Biotalys reaches first step in bioinsecticide work with Syngenta

The two firms move forward with early lab results as demand grows for safer pest control tools.

BELGIUM – Biotalys has reached its first research step in a joint project with Syngenta to develop a new bioinsecticide, marking early progress in efforts to improve crop protection.

The Belgium-based AgTech firm said initial lab tests showed positive in vitro results using its AGROBODY™ platform. The tests focused on new bioactive ingredients that target key insect pests at a molecular level.

Carlo Boutton, interim CEO of Biotalys, said the outcome supports the company’s direction. “Biotalys is dedicated to developing crop protection solutions that combine strong performance with clear sustainability benefits. Working with Syngenta helps us move faster from research to field use,” he said.

“This first step shows the promise of our platform in insect control, and we look forward to building on this work with our partner.”

Focus on resistant pests

Farmers continue to face rising insect resistance, while rules on chemical use keep getting stricter. This has pushed demand for options that remain effective over time and reduce harm to the environment.

Biotalys said its protein-based products offer a new way to manage resistant pest populations. The company aims to provide tools that fit well within existing pest control programs while keeping a strong focus on safety and precision.

The partnership will now move into the next phase, where teams will test the active ingredients on living organisms. Syngenta will make a milestone payment to Biotalys as part of the agreement, though the company said this will not affect its current cash position in a major way.

Syngenta’s wider performance

The update comes shortly after Syngenta Group shared its 2025 financial results. The company reported full-year sales of US$28.4 billion, a slight drop of 1% from the year before. However, earnings rose to US$4.4 billion, up 13%, as the firm improved cost control and margins.

“We delivered solid results in a year marked by lower commodity prices and global uncertainty,” the company said. “Our focus on cost discipline and a stronger product mix supported this performance.”

Crop protection remained a key area of growth, with sales reaching US$13.7 billion, up 4%. North America led this growth, while Europe and the Africa and Middle East region also recorded gains.

The ongoing work with Biotalys fits into this broader push to strengthen product offerings, especially as farmers look for new ways to deal with pests under tighter rules.
