Industry leaders say stronger partnerships and wider use of fortified flour can help reduce hidden hunger across Africa and Asia.

GERMANY – Millers from around the world met at the FlourWorld Museum in Wittenburg, Germany, for the annual Millers for Nutrition meeting, where they renewed their commitment to improving food security through flour fortification.
The meeting focused on expanding access to fortified flour and strengthening cooperation between millers, governments, nutrition experts, and development partners.
Participants said flour remains one of the most widely consumed foods worldwide, making it an effective way to deliver important nutrients such as iron, folic acid, vitamin A, and other vitamins and minerals.
They agreed that wider adoption of flour fortification can help reduce hidden hunger and improve public health, especially in countries where wheat and maize flour form a large part of daily diets.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to share knowledge on improving fortification programmes, strengthening compliance systems, and using digital tools to monitor product quality and increase transparency across supply chains. Delegates stressed that millers have an important role in supporting national nutrition goals by producing safe, high quality fortified flour.
The choice of the FlourWorld Museum as the meeting venue reflected the long history of milling while highlighting the growing focus on nutrition in the industry. Participants also called on governments to include millers more closely in national food security plans so that fortification programmes can reach more consumers.
Millers for Nutrition said it plans to expand its membership, build stronger partnerships with governments and non governmental organisations, and increase the use of fortification technologies. The meeting concluded that adding essential nutrients to everyday foods remains one of the most effective ways to reduce hidden hunger and improve nutrition.
The latest meeting follows another important development announced in India in October 2025. Millers for Nutrition, powered by TechnoServe, partnered with the Gujarat Roller Flour Millers Association and Fortify Health to introduce seven fortified wheat flour brands in Ahmedabad.
The products contain essential micronutrients, including iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12, to help address hidden hunger and improve public health. The initiative grew from a joint wheat flour fortification training workshop held in Ahmedabad in late 2024 and marked another step in increasing the availability of fortified wheat flour in retail markets.
The products are sold in packs ranging from 5 kg to 50 kg, giving consumers more options to access fortified staple foods while supporting wider nutrition efforts.
