World Flour Day 2024 planned for March 20

GERMANY- The fifth World Flour Day is scheduled for March 20th and has the motto of “World Flour Day – Giving Day.” This campaign aims to inspire acts of kindness and encourage others to follow suit, with a focus on millers organizing donations for underprivileged children.

World Flour Day celebrates an essential staple food that has been a part of human nutrition and development for millennia, as well as the milling industry. It is a day of recognition, appreciation, and hope. This year, the FlourWorld Museum is connecting the celebration of “white gold” with a call for social engagement.

Inspired by the motto “Millers meeting social challenges,” mills worldwide are invited to actively participate in the campaign and are encouraged to donate flour to charitable institutions such as children’s aid foundations and orphanages.

This Giving Day campaign not only offers a way to provide practical assistance but also helps to raise awareness of the invaluable services provided by millers to the public. Every contribution counts, whether large or small. The FlourWorld Museum will set an example by donating 500 kilograms of flour.

Flour is much more than just a staple food,” said Peter Steiner, global head of business unit MC Mühlenchemie, at the initiative of which the museum was founded. “It symbolizes life. With our global charitable initiative, we want to strengthen awareness of the outstanding role the milling industry plays in nutrition. Flour is a staple food and an integral part of cuisines everywhere. It contributes daily to the well-being of billions of people. When we donate flour, we donate life.”

The FlourWorld Museum will showcase the various initiatives for World Flour Day 2024, which will serve as the inaugural event on March 20.

On and around that day, www.worldflourday.com will publish photos, videos, and stories demonstrating how the global milling community supports children in need. These activities will also be posted on social media using the hashtag #worldflourday.

The website will emphasize the global significance of flour and showcase its diverse uses and prospects, while also drawing attention to the pressing need to support children worldwide.

The date of March 20 was chosen because it falls in the middle of the solstice. In the Northern Hemisphere, this marks the beginning of spring, a time for planting, while in the Southern Hemisphere, it signifies autumn and harvest.

World Flour Day was initiated three years ago and has since become a significant event in the calendars of millers worldwide.

Established in 2008, the FlourWorld Museum in Wittenburg, near Hamburg, Germany, houses the world’s largest collection of flour sacks, comprising over 3,900 sacks from 150 countries.

Flour.Power.Life” is the overarching concept that unites the sacks, depicting the traditions, history, and myths of flour. The museum and World Flour Day celebrate flour and the millers of the world, who provide humanity with flour every day.
