Viterra outpaced major global competitors, including Cargill, which exported 11.37 million tonnes, and COFCO, with 10.35 million tonnes
ARGENTINA – Viterra Ltd. has once again emerged as Argentina’s leading agricultural commodities exporter, topping the list for the third consecutive marketing season with 13.55 million tonnes exported in the 2023–24 cycle, according to data released by the Rosario Grain Exchange.
Based on Foreign Sales Declarations (DJVE), Viterra outpaced major global competitors, including Cargill, which exported 11.37 million tonnes, and COFCO, with 10.35 million tonnes.
Collectively, the top three exporters were responsible for nearly 39% of the country’s total grain exports, which reached 89.82 million tonnes by the end of March 2024.
The report highlights a strong performance in Argentina’s soybean and corn exports, which together accounted for the bulk of the export volume.
Soybean exports rose sharply to 40.88 million tonnes, a 29% increase compared to the average of the previous three seasons. Corn exports also recorded solid gains, totaling 37.86 million tonnes, which is 16% higher than the three-year average.
Despite these gains, wheat exports experienced a dramatic decline. Only 3.62 million tonnes of wheat were exported during the season, marking a 61% drop from the previous cycle and a 70% decrease compared to the average over the last three years.
The Rosario Grain Exchange attributed the decline to lingering effects of the 2022–23 drought, which significantly reduced wheat yields, as well as the rollover of export declarations from earlier periods, which distorted current figures.
Barley exports held steady at 3.83 million tonnes, maintaining parity with the previous year. The sunflower segment, however, showed improved performance with exports reaching 2.37 million tonnes, suggesting a recovery in both production and demand.
Sorghum exports saw a notable increase to 1.26 million tonnes, although they still fell short of the average seen in recent seasons.
In terms of commodity leadership by exporter, Viterra led in soybeans with 8.46 million tonnes and in sunflower with 990,000 tonnes.
ADM topped corn exports with 6.97 million tonnes, while Bunge Global SA was the leading wheat exporter with 760,000 tonnes. Cervecería y Maltería Quilmes led in barley with 670,000 tonnes, and ACA dominated sorghum exports with 320,000 tonnes.
Rounding out the top ten exporters for the year were Bunge Global SA with 8.72 million tonnes, AGD at 8.65 million tonnes, Louis Dreyfus Co. with 8.57 million tonnes, ADM at 8.04 million tonnes, ACA with 5.65 million tonnes, Molinos Agro at 5.15 million tonnes, and CHS Inc., which recorded 1.37 million tonnes.
