UK – UK Flour Millers, the trade association representing the UK’s flour milling industry, has announced the promotion of Sophie Young to Head of Operations, effective January 1, 2025.
Young, who joined the organization in 2014 as Administration Manager, brings over a decade of experience in event and office management to her new role.
In her previous position, Young was instrumental in managing daily operations at UK Flour Millers’ headquarters and overseeing the building on behalf of the Millers’ Mutual Association. Her responsibilities also included event management and strengthening relationships with association members.
As Head of Operations, Young will continue to oversee the office’s day-to-day activities and collaborate with The Rice Association. Her promotion reflects her significant contributions to the organization’s operational and event planning functions over the past decade.
UK Flour Millers, representing 32 member companies, plays a vital role in the UK’s food supply chain. The industry supplies 3.8 million tonnes of flour annually, contributing to a combined turnover of £2 billion for UK flour milling businesses.
In recent years, the organization has been active in promoting the importance of flour in the national diet. Initiatives such as “Fibre February” aim to address dietary fiber deficiencies among UK adults.
Additionally, UK Flour Millers has been involved in approving new wheat varieties to enhance domestic flour production. In September 2024, the organization approved “SY Cheer” as the first new Group 1 wheat variety in seven years, aiming to increase the supply of quality UK wheat.
Sophie Young’s appointment comes at a time when UK Flour Millers is actively engaging with the public through various platforms. The organization has been releasing videos on social media to highlight the importance of the flour milling industry.
Recently, the association unveiled a redesigned and enhanced version of its FAB Flour website, aimed at revolutionizing the home baking experience for enthusiasts across the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The revamped site features a sleek, user-friendly design, introducing a host of new tools and resources to make baking and cooking both accessible and enjoyable.
The updated website now includes innovative tools such as pre-set baking timers, easy conversion charts, and an editable serving size calculator. These features are designed to simplify the baking process and cater to a diverse audience, from beginners to seasoned cooks.
