Tiger Brands consolidates production with mega bakery construction in Gauteng

The new facility, expected to be completed and commissioned in 2026, will consolidate several smaller inland bakeries into a single high-capacity production hub capable of producing approximately 12,000 loaves of bread every hour.

SOUTH AFRICA – Tiger Brands, one of Africa’s largest listed food manufacturers, is pressing ahead with the construction of a large-scale bakery facility on the East Rand, in a strategic move to streamline its inland bread production network and sharpen its competitive edge in South Africa’s highly contested baked goods market.

The expansive project represents a massive structural shift for the 105-year-old company as it aims to modernize its milling and baking division.

By introducing a massive centralized footprint, the facility is designed to replace five to six older, less efficient inland bakeries that are currently scattered across the region.

The mega facility will operate under Tiger Brands’ iconic Albany bread brand, which has been a staple in South African households for decades.

When the factory reaches full operational capacity, it is projected to produce an impressive 12,000 loaves of bread per hour.

According to the company’s latest corporate timelines, the equipment containers are already in transit, and the facility is firmly on track to be completed and fully commissioned before the close of the calendar year.

This strategic investment forms the center of a broader consolidation master plan initiated by Tiger Brands to establish decentralized “mega sites” throughout South Africa.

Chief Executive Officer Tjaart Kruger and Chief Financial Officer Thushen Govender have emphasized that the primary motivation behind the facility is leveraging economies of scale. Rather than simply modernizing equipment, building an entirely new plant allows the company to re-engineer its entire raw material supply chain and logistics network.

Crucially, the super bakery is projected to slash conversion costs by a staggering 50% while eliminating approximately R250 million (US$15.4 million) in annual overhead expenses.

In its latest interim results, the company revealed that it expects the super bakery to be completed before the end of 2026.

As of 1 June, the equipment containers for the facility were in transit and are expected to arrive in the coming months for the buildout.

The advantage of building an entirely new facility is that it can be reorganized to improve efficiency across the entire production chain.

It is not merely enhancing the productivity of an existing bakery, but rather reorganizing a bakery to be centred around leveraging scale.

Tiger Brands aims to be the lowest-cost producer of bread in South Africa after its investment in the new super bakery.

Amid ongoing macroeconomic volatility and strained consumer disposable income across South Africa, these structural efficiencies will help Tiger Brands keep its essential bread lines accessible to lower-income segments while reclaiming market share in a highly competitive landscape.

The super bakery shows that the company is firmly on the front foot again, investing in savings and growth, not merely cost-cutting as it once did.

Part of this includes investment in product innovation, with a particular focus on driving growth in the breakfast segment under the Jungle brand and continued snackification.

This includes the launch of a new porridge under the Jungle brand, which is coming soon.

Tiger Brands has also effectively relaunched its Ingrams personal care brand to increase its penetration in the functional creams segment.

It remains dominant across its focus brands, with all but Energade, Black Cat, and Ingrams holding the top spot in volume and value share in their segments.

Last December, tiger brand invested R1 billion (US$58.55M) in a state-of-the-art bakery facility in Pretoria to consolidate and modernize its operations.
