Planet Doughnut launches new product development kitchen

The space will serve as a hub for research and development, enabling the brand to respond quickly to evolving consumer tastes and trends in the competitive bakery sector.

UK – Planet Doughnut, the Shropshire-based doughnut specialist, has unveiled a state-of-the-art Product Development Kitchen at its Shrewsbury bakery, backed by a £25,000 (US$33,450) investment.

The investment is aimed at driving innovation and supporting the brand’s continued growth within the dessert sector.

This dedicated innovation hub signals the brand’s aggressive push into broader dessert categories, moving beyond its traditional oil-and-fryer focus to fuel recipe experimentation and portfolio expansion.

The new facility equips the team with advanced tools for testing ingredients, techniques, and formats, enabling rapid prototyping of novel treats, such as hybrid pastries or seasonal specials.

Previously constrained by production setups, Planet Doughnut now accelerates development cycles, with initial trials underway for multiple dessert lines slated for early 2026 launches.

Managing Director Rob Jones hailed it as a “game-changer,” stating: “This kitchen frees us to innovate boldly and explore new sweet treat frontiers.”

The investment coincides with robust financials, including nearly £1 million (US$1.34M) in year-on-year revenue growth, underscoring Planet Doughnut’s ascent as one of the UK’s fastest-rising bakery brands.

Two new roles in product development have been created, boosting local employment at its Battlefield Enterprise Park headquarters and enhancing in-house expertise for bespoke wholesale orders, from weddings to corporate events.

Specializing in frozen wholesale and handcrafted doughnuts since 2017, the company supplies major trade shows and partners like Shack Events with standout creations for gaming launches and holidays.

This move aligns with UK bakery sector trends, where innovation drives 5-7% annual growth amid demand for premium, customizable desserts.

The unveiling of the kitchen also underscores the brand’s emphasis on sustainability and responsible sourcing. By experimenting with locally sourced ingredients and reducing food waste through small-batch testing, Planet Doughnut aims to align its creative process with its values.

As quick-service desserts boom, projected to hit £2 billion (US$2.68B) by 2028, Planet Doughnut eyes national scaling.

The kitchen positions itself against rivals like Doughnut Time, promising fresh hits like Pistachio Pralines or glittered wedding specials to captivate Gen Z and event planners.

For Planet Doughnut, the new facility represents more than just a kitchen; it is a creative playground where imagination meets indulgence, setting the stage for the next chapter in the brand’s sweet success story.
