CANADA – Lallemand has transitioned from traditional email and phone ordering methods to a self-service B2B portal powered by composable technology from commercetools.
With a global presence spanning over 50 countries and employing more than 5,000 people, Lallemand, an industrial biotechnology business, has historically relied on offline sales channels to serve its customers.
However, with an evolving market and rising customer expectations, the company has faced increasing inefficiencies, escalating operational costs, and limited options for scaling its commercial operations.
Recognizing these challenges, Lallemand aimed to modernize its digital commerce platform for its North American Baking business unit.
The new platform accommodates over 1,000 product selections, multiple brands, various currencies, and offers instant ordering. It provides advanced digital tools for both buyers and sales teams.
To facilitate this transformation, Lallemand partnered with commercetools and EPAM to create a scalable and flexible ordering experience built on MACH principles, which emphasize microservices, API-first design, cloud-native architecture, and headless technology.
The B2B portal introduces a digital ordering process with a user-friendly interface, personalized customer dashboards, and enhanced end-user support.
It aims to replace the manual and time-consuming order methods previously managed via email and phone.
Additionally, Lallemand can now manage its international business operations more effectively, benefiting from support for multiple regions, currencies, and brands.
“Lallemand is a family business, and we view our customers as an extension of our family. To continue delivering exceptional service—a commitment we’ve proudly upheld for over 100 years—we needed a commerce solution that could manage complex business scenarios while scaling alongside our global growth. We chose commercetools because it was evident that no other provider could offer the flexibility to serve a wide range of use cases, touchpoints, business units, and regions,” said Caroline Fortin, Director of Customer Experience at Lallemand.
“Lallemand’s transformation is a powerful example of how a company with deep-rooted heritage can embrace digital transformation and innovation while staying true to the core values that define their business. The trust Lallemand has placed in commercetools to build its digital commerce platform showcases our commitment to driving innovation. It underscores the importance of partnering with a reliable technology provider that not only helps businesses meet evolving market demands but also preserves their connection to their customers,” said Eric Speciel, Chief Customer Officer at commercetools.
