Former Tanzanian President Dr. Jakaya Kikwete appointed to Sanku Board of Directors

Dr. Kikwete has served as Chairperson of the African Union, bringing invaluable expertise in global health and development to Sanku‘s strategic direction.

TANZANIA – Sanku, a nonprofit organization committed to eradicating hidden hunger in Africa through innovative food fortification technologies, has welcomed His Excellency Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, to its Board of Directors.

Dr. Kikwete’s appointment underscores Sanku’s mission to ensure access to nutritious food for vulnerable populations across the continent.

As President of Tanzania from 2005 to 2015, he demonstrated a profound dedication to nutrition and public health initiatives, including the launch of Tanzania’s Call to Action on Nutrition and the enactment of the nation’s first food fortification law.

These efforts have significantly influenced Sanku’s operations, providing a foundational framework for the organization’s impact in addressing micronutrient deficiencies.

Sanku focuses on combating hidden hunger, a condition affecting over two billion people worldwide, by equipping small-scale mills with automated dosifiers that add essential nutrients to staple foods such as maize flour.

This technology, developed in collaboration with partners like Vodafone, enables real-time monitoring and cost-effective fortification, reaching remote communities where large-scale programs often fall short.

The organization aims to provide lifesaving nutrients to 100 million individuals by 2026, emphasizing equitable access to fortified foods to prevent intellectual disabilities in children, blindness in adults, and maternal mortality.

In his extensive career, Dr. Kikwete has held prominent leadership positions, including serving as Co-Chair of the World Refugee & Migration Council, as a member of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement Lead Group, and as Chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam.

He also served as Chairperson of the African Union, bringing invaluable expertise in global health and development to Sanku’s strategic direction.

Sanku’s leadership expressed profound honor in Dr. Kikwete’s involvement, noting that his wisdom will guide efforts to eliminate hidden hunger and promote safe, nutritious food for all families in Africa.

This appointment aligns with Sanku’s commitment to leveraging proven technologies and partnerships to foster sustainable health improvements.
