Oman Flour Mills introduces nation’s first electric locomotive, advancing sustainability goals

The integration of this electric locomotive underscores OFM’s dedication to adopting cutting-edge industrial technologies

OMAN – Oman Flour Mills (OFM) has unveiled the arrival of Oman’s inaugural electric locomotive, representing a significant advancement in the nation’s efforts toward industrial modernization and environmental sustainability.

This development, undertaken in partnership with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion and the Royal Oman Police, is designed to elevate national industrial competitiveness, fortify the food security sector, and promote in-country value addition.

The integration of this electric locomotive underscores OFM’s dedication to adopting cutting-edge industrial technologies that prioritize operational efficiency and ecological responsibility.

According to company projections, the system is anticipated to reduce operating and maintenance expenses by 59 percent, while substantially diminishing carbon emissions, air pollution, and noise levels. Furthermore, it is expected to enhance workplace safety standards, contributing to a more secure and productive environment for employees.

Waleed bin Said Al Salmi, Transport and Logistics Operations Manager at OFM, highlighted the alignment of this initiative with broader national and international objectives.

The electric locomotive supports Oman’s ambition to attain net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, in accordance with Oman Vision 2040 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,” he stated.

Al Salmi further elaborated that the locomotive will initially facilitate the transportation of raw materials from grain silos to production facilities, serving as a foundational element in OFM’s transition to greener practices.

Equipped with a towing capacity of 60 tonnes, a battery range extending to 190 kilometers, a battery capacity of 423 kilowatts, and a rapid charging duration of merely 1.5 hours, the locomotive delivers robust performance alongside notable environmental advantages.

It positions itself as a superior alternative to traditional equipment, offering reduced emissions, quieter operation, and lower long-term costs.

Al Salmi emphasized OFM’s proactive approach to sustainable energy transitions, noting the implementation of high-impact projects that exemplify leadership in clean energy utilization and resource management.

These endeavors have been facilitated through collaborative efforts with governmental bodies, particularly the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, ensuring alignment with national priorities.

This milestone not only reinforces OFM’s role in Oman’s industrial landscape but also sets a precedent for other sectors to embrace innovative, eco-friendly solutions in pursuit of long-term sustainability.
