Egypt, China discuss US$100M feed factory investment

EGYPT – The Chinese agro-industrial group New Hope plans to invest US$100 million to set up a complex of animal feed manufacturing plants, including aquaculture in Egypt.

This was revealed during a high-level meeting on December 4 between Minister of Local Development Manal Awad and representatives from Chinese agribusiness giant New Hope.

Held in the Administrative Capital, the discussions explored opportunities to localize Chinese industries, leverage expertise in agricultural manufacturing and renewable energy, and establish industrial zones across Egypt.

Representing New Hope, Liu Chang, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors, expressed the company’s commitment to expanding its operations in Egypt.

“We see Egypt as a strategic partner, and the government’s supportive policies, including value-added tax benefits and streamlined investment procedures, have been instrumental in our success,” Liu said.

Liu highlighted the company’s global leadership in feed production and food chains, noting its extensive portfolio of international investments. She affirmed that Egypt remains a priority market, particularly in the fields of feed production and aquaculture.

Minister Awad emphasized the significance of such collaborations in strengthening the economic, trade, and cultural ties between Egypt and China.

“These investments are vital in building bridges of cooperation and contributing to the growth of our local economy,” Awad stated.

Currently, New Hope operates five feed production factories across Egypt, located in Menoufia, Beni Suef, Beheira (Hosh Issa and Wadi El Natrun), and Gamasa in Dakahlia.

These facilities collectively produce 650,000 tons of feed annually, accounting for 10% of Egypt’s total production. With US$70 million invested to date, the company plans to increase capacity to one million tons per year and expand its financial commitment to US$100 million.

The company’s investments have significantly contributed to local job creation, with Egyptians comprising 94% of the workforce.

Our partnership not only enhances employment rates but also equips Egyptians with advanced Chinese technologies in feed production,” Liu added.

The meeting was attended by other key stakeholders, including Wang Ji, Vice President of the Egyptian-Chinese Businessmen Association, Mohamed Alaa, Secretary General of the Association, and Hossam El-Qawish, Assistant Minister of Local Development for International Cooperation.

Liu Chang praised Egypt’s potential as a regional investment hub and highlighted plans to further integrate local expertise into New Hope’s projects.
