CHS completes US$105M export terminal upgrade

This upgrade also allows the terminal to load vessels with multiple commodities more efficiently.

USACHS Inc. has successfully completed a $105 million upgrade and expansion of its Myrtle Grove Terminal in Belle Chasse, Louisiana, enhancing its grain handling capacity and speed by 30%.

Key enhancements include:

– The addition of six concrete silos to improve product capability and efficiency.

– A new bulk weighing and grading system that accommodates three grain flows.

– An upgraded dock and barge unloading system for better efficiency.

– The introduction of the first permanent E-Crane in the U.S. dedicated solely to grain exports, which will lower energy costs and boost efficiency.

As the largest farmer-owned cooperative and a major agribusiness in the U.S., CHS noted that these improvements also increase the terminal’s capacity for handling soybean meal and distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS).

The facility can now load vessels more quickly with a combination of grains and grain byproducts for international customers.

Located on the Mississippi River, 25 miles south of New Orleans, the terminal receives grains like corn, soybeans, and wheat via barge and rail, and it loads barges and vessels from this strategic position.

John Griffith, executive vice president of CHS’s agriculture business, stated that the Myrtle Grove facility’s strategic location will enhance CHS’s ability to export grain with greater precision, supporting growth across the supply chain from farmers to global markets.

He emphasized that faster loading and unloading processes will help CHS connect producers with more customers worldwide.

CHS Inc., a Fortune 500 secondary cooperative based in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, is owned by U.S. agricultural cooperatives, farmers, ranchers, and numerous preferred stockholders.

The company operates various food processing, wholesale, farm supply, financial services, and retail businesses, and it distributes Cenex brand fuel across 19 states, making it one of North America’s largest convenience store networks.

With a presence in 65 countries and a workforce of around 10,000, CHS provides crop inputs, market access, and risk management services through its agronomy, grains, foods, and energy sectors.

The company’s global terminal network handles approximately 2 billion bushels of grain each year.

CHS is recognized as the second largest grain handling company in North America, with 230 grain storage facilities and a licensed grain storage capacity of 403 million bushels, according to Sosland Publishing Co.’s 2025 Grain & Milling Annual.
