This initiative is part of the government’s goal to cultivate at least 7, 400 hectares of lowland rice within five years.

Exports rose to 21.55 million tonnes from 18.05 million in 2024, close to the 2022 record of 22.3 million tonnes.

Lower prices are likely to provide relief to price-sensitive consumers in Africa and parts of Asia

Between January and June, the country will require approximately 750,000 MT of rice, yet projected domestic production for the same period stands at 110,000MT.

The plant will focus on processing popular South Indian rice varieties such as Sona Masoori and Kolam, with commercial production expected to begin in February 2026.
