Bühler, xFarm Technologies partner to drive sustainability in agri-food industry

SWITZERLAND – Swiss food processing giant Bühler has joined forces with agri-tech innovator xFarm Technologies to provide food companies with cutting-edge digital tools to track and reduce environmental impacts from farm to shelf.

The two Swiss companies have decided to work together to provide food companies with the ability to address emissions, thereby revolutionizing sustainability monitoring across the food value chain.

With 70-90% of a food product’s CO2e emissions occurring at the agricultural stage, tackling Scope 3 emissions is a growing priority for the industry. By combining farm-level data collection with food processing analytics, Bühler and xFarm Technologies seek to create a seamless, data-driven approach to sustainability.

This collaboration aligns with Bühler’s ambitious “50-50-50” goals: reducing food production waste, energy use, and water consumption by 50% each. The initiative will allow food producers to monitor their environmental footprint in real-time and implement targeted reduction strategies.

Leveraging data for greater sustainability

xFarm Technologies, a leader in farm digitalization, provides agricultural businesses with tools to track and analyze farm operations. Its xFarm platform enables farmers to monitor water use, crop management, and carbon emissions, offering valuable insights for sustainable production.

Meanwhile, Bühler’s Environmental Quantification Services help food processors measure their environmental impact, ensuring a transparent and traceable supply chain. Together, these technologies will enable food manufacturers to make informed decisions that enhance both sustainability and efficiency.

Ian Roberts, CTO at Bühler, emphasized the partnership’s potential.

“Since first connecting with xFarm Technologies in 2018, we’ve seen their impressive growth and expertise. This collaboration will give food companies deeper insights into the impact of their agricultural sourcing,” he noted.

For his part, Matteo Vanotti, CEO of xFarm Technologies, highlighted the importance of working with Swiss excellence like Bühler, which, like xFarm Technologies, strongly believes in investing in R&D and innovation.

He revealed that this partnership represents a great opportunity for all stakeholders in the agri-food industry who want to have an end-to-end vision of what happens along the supply chain, from the field to the shelf.

This is an exciting step in our mission to create a more sustainable agri-food system. With over 500,000 farmers and 100 supply chains using our platform, we are now better positioned to support the entire food production process.”
