Bühler to host food extrusion workshop in Nairobi for industry professionals

Participants will gain insights into extrusion principles, including the roles of screw elements, the effects of mechanical and thermal energy input, and the configuration of screws for producing direct and indirect expanded products.

KENYA – Bühler, the Swiss-based global leader in food technology and process solutions, will host its flagship Food Extrusion Workshop from July 15 to 18, 2025, at the African Milling School and Bühler’s customer site in Nairobi, Kenya

Designed to advance skills in a pivotal food processing method, the four-day workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of extrusion technology, an essential technique in the manufacture of modern food and feed products, as detailed here.

Tailored for operations supervisors, engineers, and R&D professionals, the course combines in-depth theoretical instruction with practical, hands-on training using Bühler’s high-performance twin-screw extruder.

Conducted in English, the sessions aim to strengthen participants’ expertise in both foundational and advanced aspects of food extrusion.

Participants will gain insights into extrusion principles, including the roles of screw elements, the effects of mechanical and thermal energy input, and the configuration of screws for producing direct and indirect expanded products.

The curriculum expands further into advanced processes, including steam addition and preconditioning, vacuum degassing, co-extrusion, remote-cut technology, colouring, coating, drying, and toasting.

These technical modules will be illustrated through demonstrations of products like ready-to-eat breakfast cereals, snacks, texturised plant-based proteins, modified flours, and extruded breadcrumbs.

The workshop also includes sessions on analytical methods used to assess raw materials and understand the transformation of starch and protein during extrusion cooking.

Theoretical coverage of reconstituted fortified rice and wet texturised plant proteins reflects the growing interest in sustainable and plant-based foods.

Early bird attendance rates apply

Attendance costs US$900, excluding VAT, with a discounted early bird rate of US$850 available for those who register by June 10, 2025.

The registration fee covers course materials, daily lunches, a networking dinner, and round-trip transport between the hotel and training site.

Accommodation, airport transfers, and travel costs must be arranged separately. Safety is a priority, and participants are required to bring their own safety shoes and glasses.

The workshop highlights Bühler’s broader commitment to innovation, sustainability, and knowledge sharing in the food and feed production sector.

Track record of empowering the industry

In another move to empower the industry through training, Bühler hosted an aquaculture technical roundtable in March 2025, reinforcing its leadership in feed processing technology and reaffirming its commitment to industry development.

The training brought together feed professionals to explore practical and innovative approaches to improving aquafeed production.

Key topics covered included species-specific feed design tailored to aquatic feeding behaviours, the application of extrusion and pelletising technologies, and how different processing stages, such as starch gelatinisation and oil absorption, affect the quality and performance of feed.

Participants also examined strategies for selecting high-quality animal and plant-based raw materials to formulate nutritionally balanced, cost-effective feeds.

Emphasis was placed on leveraging locally available by-products to reduce formulation costs without compromising feed integrity.

Through such initiatives, Bühler continues to support knowledge sharing and capacity building across the feed and aquaculture value chains.
