The two consumer packaged goods leaders announced the launch of a new packaging innovation featuring the first resealable bag integrated directly inside a traditional cereal box.

USA – General Mills has partnered with Ziploc, the food storage brand owned by SC Johnson, to introduce resealable packaging for its Cheerios breakfast cereals, addressing consumer demand for easier storage and improved freshness.
The new Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal packaging features a resealable bag inside a traditional cereal box, combining convenient pouring with a closure designed to help keep cereal fresh for longer.
The innovation is initially available for original Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios through Walmart.com, with a wider rollout to retailers across the United States planned in the coming months.
The collaboration brings together General Mills’ established breakfast cereal portfolio and Ziploc’s experience in resealable food storage solutions, offering consumers a practical alternative to folding, clipping or transferring opened cereal bags into separate containers.
According to General Mills, the launch follows years of consumer feedback, with the company receiving hundreds of thousands of requests, comments and reactions annually concerning cereal storage.
Research cited by the company found that 90% of cereal consumers take additional steps beyond closing the cardboard box to preserve freshness, including rolling or folding the inner bag, using clips or moving the contents into airtight containers.
The new PantrySeal design incorporates a zipper-style closure that opens partially across the top of the bag, creating a built-in pouring spout.
This allows consumers to pour cereal directly into bowls, cups or mugs before resealing the bag inside the box.
The packaging is intended to reduce spills and simplify everyday handling while helping maintain product quality between servings.
Emilie Knox, vice-president and business unit director for Cheerios at General Mills, said the partnership responds to a common household frustration that consumers have repeatedly raised with the company.
Ziploc also views the collaboration as an opportunity to extend its resealable storage technology into a new product category, bringing its freshness-focused packaging expertise directly to breakfast cereal.
Developing the new format required adapting packaging technology to General Mills’ large-scale manufacturing operations.
The company said nearly one box of Cheerios is produced every second, requiring the new packaging to operate efficiently without disrupting existing production.
The product is manufactured in Buffalo, New York, where Cheerios production began in 1941.
The partnership also reflects a broader push by food manufacturers to improve packaging convenience as they compete for consumer attention and seek to strengthen established brands.
By addressing a routine storage problem without changing the cereal itself, General Mills is using packaging innovation to add value to familiar products and encourage continued consumer engagement.
