Otis Spunkmeyer has announced that 100% of its branded foods sold in the United States are now free from artificial FD&C food‑grade dyes, completing a company‑wide reformulation effort aimed at cleaner labels and school‑friendly products.

USA – Otis Spunkmeyer, the leading brand of cookies, muffins and sweet baked goods under the Aspire Bakeries, has announced that it has eliminated all Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic colors (FD&C) from its product portfolio s sold in the US, a change the company says is effective as of January 1, 2026.
The move affects a limited number of SKUs that previously contained synthetic colorants and reflects a broader industry shift toward cleaner ingredient lists and voluntary commitments for school foodservice.
The brand framed the decision as part of a broader industry shift toward cleaner labels, in response to evolving regulatory guidance and customer expectations regarding food additives.
Aspire Bakeries said the reformulations preserved product taste and texture while replacing petroleum‑based colorants with natural alternatives, ensuring continuity for retail and foodservice customers.
The company emphasized that the change was implemented without compromising food safety or shelf life, and that quality control protocols were used to validate the new formulations.
The announcement follows wider regulatory and industry momentum: federal agencies and major food manufacturers have been moving away from certain synthetic dyes amid health and policy debates, and trade groups have encouraged voluntary commitments to reduce artificial additives in school and institutional foodservice.
Otis Spunkmeyer joined the American Bakers Association’s “Baked Goods in Schools Pledge” in 2025, a voluntary initiative to remove FD&C colors from baked goods served in K‑12 school meal programs by the start of the 2026/27 school year, and the company said its complete portfolio change aligns with that pledge.
Company representatives noted that the transition was largely straightforward because most Otis Spunkmeyer items did not rely on synthetic dyes, and only a limited subset of products needed recipe adjustments.
Aspire Bakeries indicated it will continue to monitor regulatory developments and consumer trends, and that it remains committed to transparency in ingredient sourcing.
The company plans to update packaging and product information where necessary and to communicate changes to customers and distributors.
As the food industry continues to respond to calls for cleaner labels, Otis Spunkmeyer’s dye removal is likely to be cited as an example of a mainstream brand adapting quickly to shifting expectations while maintaining product familiarity for consumers.
Aspire Bakeries said it will continue to monitor consumer feedback and regulatory developments and will update product labeling where necessary.
The company also reiterated commitments to food safety and responsible marketing, particularly in communications aimed at children and families.
