The newly introduced product is positioned to enhance income-generating opportunities among small-scale vendors

ZAMBIA – National Milling Corporation Limited (NMC), the largest milling company in Zambia, has launched its innovative pre-mixed flour blend for vitumbuwa, a traditional Zambian fritter, marking a significant milestone in its product portfolio.
The launch, which celebrates over 40 years of collaboration between Paza Trading Limited and National Milling Corporation (NMC), was held at Paza Trading’s expanded facility. It featured Hon. Sheal Mulyata MP, Lusaka Provincial Minister, who officially unveiled the product and proceeded to prepare traditional vitumbuwas live on-site.
The minister demonstrated how the mix simplifies the traditional street snack, add water and yeast, to create crispy, golden dough fritters within minutes.
In her remarks, Hon. Mulyata applauded the collaboration between Paza Trading and NMC. She emphasized that the premixed flour supports household consumption and empowers small-scale vendors. She further highlighted its potential to enhance livelihoods, particularly for women, across Zambian communities.
Vitumbuwa Flour Mix is scheduled to roll out nationally in 1 kg, 2 kg, and 5 kg packages. According to NMC, the debut strategically focuses on ready‑mix products aligning with urban consumer trends favoring convenience without sacrificing traditional flavours.
With its established distribution network, including 45 depots and in-store presence in all major retail chains, NMC is poised to secure solid market penetration for the new mix
The vitumbuwa mix is positioned as both a practical and time-saving option, delivering consistent results without the standard labor and time intensity of traditional methods. NMC’s promotional materials tout it as “crispy outside, soft inside, and full of flavor,” aiming to make home preparation more accessible for busy families.
As part of its broader community empowerment strategy, NMC revealed that over 500 vendors across 10 districts have already registered for a year-long training programme. This initiative aims to help transform vitumbuwa-making into a sustainable business for local entrepreneurs.
NMC, a subsidiary of Seaboard Corporation, is already a recognized leader in Zambia’s agro-processing sector. With a diversified range that includes bread flour, cake flour, maize meal, rice, pasta, popcorn and Namfeeds™ livestock feeds, NMC is renowned for quality and innovation.
Aside from product innovation, NMC is also active in community engagement. Earlier this month, the company held “Feed Excellence” poultry seminars for farmers in Eastern Province (9–12 July), aiming to raise livestock productivity through technical training.
The company also announced expanded availability for its spaghetti and macaroni lines across all depots and retail outlets nationwide.
