Unga Group secures ISO 22000 recertification across grain processing operations

The company confirms its food safety systems while growing its presence in convenient foods.

KENYA – Unga Group PLC has achieved ISO 22000:2018 recertification after an audit by SGS, confirming that its food safety systems meet global standards across its grain processing operations.

The certification covers the production of maize, wheat, and other grain and pulse products for human consumption under Food Category CIV, which focuses on processing ambient stable foods.

The company said the outcome reflects continued focus on food safety across its operations.

ISO 22000 sets requirements for food safety management systems. It requires companies to identify and control food safety risks, apply HACCP principles in daily work, maintain hygiene and traceability, and improve systems over time. Unga Group has held this certification since 2014.

The company stated that the recertification gives customers and consumers confidence in the safety and quality of its products. It also confirms that the firm follows systems that meet global benchmarks while maintaining consistency in its processes.

This development comes as Unga Group continues to expand its product range. In April 2026, the company launched Amana Instant Lemon Rice, a ready meal that cooks in under two minutes. The product targets urban consumers who need fast meal options without losing taste.

The launch reflects a wider shift in Kenya’s food sector, where companies are adding ready to eat options to meet changing lifestyles. Heat treated grain products, which allow quick preparation while keeping taste and nutritional value, are gaining ground in the market.

Global demand for ready meals continues to rise. Research and Markets estimates that the ready to eat food market stood at US$391 billion in 2024 and could reach US$480.8 billion by 2030.

In the Middle East and Africa, Business Market Insights valued the market at about US$58.57 billion in 2021, with projections showing growth to US$89.64 billion by 2028 at a rate of 6.5 percent.

Unga Group’s latest certification and product launch show how the company is maintaining food safety standards while responding to growing demand for convenient food options.
