A key feature of the expansion is the rail-based unloading capability, allowing The Andersons to unload unit trains of soybean meal directly at the export point via railroads such as BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Railroad.

USA – The Andersons, Inc. has received a significant boost for its expansion project at Port Houston, Texas, with important investments and ongoing development expected to be completed in early 2026.
This project focuses on expanding the company’s facility to support the export of soybean meal and other bulk grains, addressing growing global demand and evolving supply chain needs.
A recent milestone in the project was marked by soybean farmer leaders presenting a ceremonial check of US$275,000 to The Andersons, demonstrating strong industry support.
These funds will contribute to research, design, and pre-engineering costs for the expansion, underpinning the soybean industry’s strategic priorities to increase soybean meal export capacity, improve supply chain resilience, and diversify international markets beyond the traditional Chinese market.
The expanded terminal will add dedicated storage capacity for up to 22,000 metric tons of soybean meal, complementing the existing grain storage of 6.3 million bushels and supporting annual exports exceeding two million metric tons.
Critical infrastructure upgrades include the installation of a new conveyance system and ship loading tower to improve efficiency and throughput.
A key feature of the expansion is the rail-based unloading capability, allowing The Andersons to unload unit trains of soybean meal directly at the export point via railroads such as BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Railroad.
This capability enhances logistical efficiency and mitigates risks associated with disruptions on inland waterways, particularly the Mississippi River, where low water conditions have affected soybean shipments.
Bill Krueger, President and CEO of The Andersons, emphasized the strategic importance of the Port Houston location in supporting their customers and meeting the rising demand for renewable fuels that drives increased domestic soybean crush.
“We are pleased to extend our relationship with Port Houston as it remains a strategic location for The Andersons to support our customers in exporting to high-demand markets,” said Krueger.
The expanded facility will enable The Andersons to better serve key export regions including the Middle East, North Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, and Asia, diversifying market opportunities for U.S. soybean products.
Tom Heidt, Chief Operating Officer of Port Houston, highlighted the significance of The Andersons’ long-term lease and facility investment for regional economic growth.
He noted that this project represents an evolution in the use of the Houston Ship Channel and expects it to create new job opportunities both locally in Houston and across the American heartland.
The Andersons’ Port Houston expansion project is a crucial step toward strengthening the global competitiveness of the U.S. soybean industry through enhanced export infrastructure, diversified market access, and resilient supply chain solutions.
