COLOMBIA – Symaga, a leading silos manufacturer, has successfully completed the construction of barley storage silos for AB InBev’s new brewery in Salamina, Colombia, further strengthening their collaboration with the global brewing giant.
The newly built facility is located in Barranquilla, an area known for its highly corrosive environment.
To address this challenge and protect the quality of stored barley, Symaga installed silos equipped with double-wall covers and a polyester powder coating on both sides, providing superior corrosion resistance.
The system also includes additional insulation, ensuring stable storage conditions despite external environmental factors
A total of 14 hopper silos were supplied for the project, divided between four SCEX1070/17T45 models at 29 meters high and ten SCEX535/13T60 models at 21 meters high. Together, these silos offer a storage capacity of 11,705 cubic meters.
The interior design features a smooth lining to facilitate optimal material flow and ease of cleaning, streamlining operations within the brewery. Symaga also installed closed catwalks compliant with UNE EN ISO 14122 standards, enhancing operational safety and maintenance access
This project marks the latest chapter in a long-standing partnership between Symaga and AB InBev. The two companies have previously collaborated on storage facilities in other parts of the world.
The project is the latest within a long history of collaboration between Symaga and Meura, a brewing technology provider.
Previously, Symaga had supplied 20 hopper silos for Grupo Modelo in Apan, Mexico (2013), as well as two hopper silos for AB InBev in Salamina, Colombia, and another six in Port Elizabeth, South Africa (2022). Also, the Zambian Breweries have installed four hopper silos at their brewery in Lusaka.
The milestone comes after Symaga recently announced plans to implement a significant upgrade in its production process by introducing S450GD steel starting October 1.
This new steel type is poised to replace the current structural steel used in stiffeners and body sheets of its silos, promising to enhance the overall structural quality while reducing the final weight.
The switch aims to provide several benefits, including improved durability and a more efficient supply chain, which aligns with Symaga’s commitment to optimizing its storage solutions for customers.
The adoption of S450GD steel brings a range of advantages for both the company and its customers. With a higher yield strength, the new steel type will upgrade body sheets and stiffeners from 350N/mm² to 450N/mm², thereby reducing the overall weight of the silos without compromising on structural integrity.
This reduction in weight is expected to lower the costs associated with logistics and assembly, making Symaga’s silos more cost-effective and easier to handle. Additionally, the switch will lead to a more streamlined supply chain by ensuring greater availability of materials and reducing the need for multiple purchasing references.
