SCE to deliver infrastructure for Virunga foundation’s wheat mill initiative in DRC

SCE is providing state-of-the-art tempering and flour storage bins for the facility, enabling efficient grain processing while ensuring food quality and operational sustainability

DRC – SCE Silo Construction & Engineering, a global player in designing, developing and building silo solutions has been selected as a key technology partner in the development of a new 50-ton-per-day wheat flour mill being constructed in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a landmark initiative spearheaded by the Virunga Foundation.

The project, situated near Africa’s oldest national park, Virunga, aims to boost food security, create jobs, and restore economic resilience in the conflict-affected Lubero territory.

The flour mill is part of the broader Virunga Alliance initiative, which integrates environmental conservation with local development. SCE is providing state-of-the-art tempering and flour storage bins for the facility, enabling efficient grain processing while ensuring food quality and operational sustainability.

“The Virunga Foundation is proud to have SCE’s engineering expertise helping transform this vision into reality. This mill not only supports local wheat farmers but lays the groundwork for long-term food autonomy in the region,” said project leads.

Once completed, the facility will process locally grown wheat harvested by smallholder farmers who have revived wheat cultivation in Lubero after more than two decades of dormancy. With support from the European Union and the Virunga Foundation, farmers have been organized into cooperatives and trained in modern sustainable agricultural practices.

The project includes plans to expand wheat cultivation to 500 hectares and build two industrial-scale bakeries capable of producing over 300,000 loaves of bread per day. These efforts are expected to significantly reduce dependence on imported flour and bolster local economies.

SCE’s involvement marks a key private-sector contribution to Virunga’s mission of peacebuilding through sustainable development. “We are very proud to support the Virunga Foundation in this way,” SCE said.

With the flour mill scheduled to begin operations later this year, the project underscores Virunga foundation’s efforts to address food insecurity while promoting stability and economic opportunity in fragile regions.
