SOUTH AFRICA – Sappi Southern Africa has achieved GMP+ Feed Safety Assurance (FSA) 2020 certification for Pelletin, one of its Lignin products used as an additive in animal feed manufacturing.
Sappi is a leading Biotech global provider of materials made from wood fibre-based renewable resources. It has a rich history in the lignin market spanning almost 100 years, making it one of the very first companies to market and sell lignin for industrial applications.
The achievement makes Sappi the second organization in Africa to attain this prestigious certification after Grande Moagens de Angola achieved it in 2019.
GMP+ is the world’s largest and most rigorous animal feed certification scheme, focused on enabling companies to contribute to safe animal feed throughout the entire production chain, with an emphasis on the need for quality assurance and risk management in the production and trade of animal feed.
Sappi’s certification is for the ‘Trade in Feed’ and ‘Production of Feed Additives’ categories, respectively.
“Sappi’s certification gives Pelletin a competitive edge in the global market for Lignin products, as it demonstrates its compliance with the highest standards of quality assurance and risk management in the animal feed industry,” said Jason Knock, general manager of Lignin for Sappi Southern Africa.
He added that the milestone is vital for the health and welfare of livestock and the safety of food products derived from them.
Pelletin is a technical lignin that primarily functions as a binder in the production of compound animal feeds.
It is a natural wood-based product that acts as a natural glue that binds all the feed ingredients and additives together to produce cost-effective compound feed pellets with enhanced durability and strength.
This makes for a cost-effective compound feed pellet with enhanced durability and strength,” explained Knock.
According to the experts, the combined anti-caking and dispersing properties of the product promote mixing uniformity and homogenous blending of all feed ingredients, acting as an effective lubricant reducing friction in the pelleting process, as well as reducing wear and tear on the manufacturing equipment.
“We are delighted to receive this internationally recognized certification, which confirms that our products meet the highest standards of quality and safety in the animal feed sector.”
Knock thanked the hard work and dedication of their team at the Tugela Mill, who successfully passed the rigorous audits required for GMP+ certification.
He said that the company is now committed to maintaining and improving standards and processes to ensure the satisfaction and trust of its feed customers.
